Characterized by a dense group of industries and factories that brought about the industrial revolution in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the Poble Nou area in Barcelona has undergone a deep and intense transformation in the last two decades. A change of new technologies and emerging companies, design rooms, museums, theatres, cultural centres... and homes.

The architecture and interior design studio All Around Lab, led by duo Noelia de la Red and Jordi Ribas,  was commissioned to turn this compact industrial space, originally an open-plan warehouse, with a narrow floor plan and relatively few windows, 120sqm habitable space. A bright and airy residence winner in the Interior Design of 2022 Ascer Award.
On the lower level, All Around Lab designed a double-height living room to enhance daylight, while on the mezzanine level are two-bedroom, using the minimum means to inhabit the place: white painted brickwork, exposed concrete pillars, a metal staircase, and a precast concrete slab with elements remembering the traditional Catalan vaults.

All Around Lab used continuous materials with a monochrome palette of white and light grey hues colours, whereas architecture, furniture, and different textures of the materials were dialogue in a continuous whole. The aim looks for the architects was to obtain a bright, neutral, and warm also place. A minimal vision focuses on satisfying the needs of its inhabitants.

ASCER Jury statement: "From the project, the jury highlights the reduction to a minimum of aesthetic and material means by using ceramic both in flooring and in furniture covering, giving the whole complex a visual coherence, which thanks to the use of ceramic sheets ensures the durability."

Project description by All Around Lab

Ávila is a project that reinterprets what was originally an open-plan warehouse located in the Poble Nou neighbourhood of Barcelona to turn it into a 120m2 multifunctional and habitable space. The proposal aims to carry out this transformation using what we call “the minimum means to inhabit a place”, namely, storage, humid spaces and circulations, considering the entire free volume, and not just it's surface.

From the arrangement of different construction pieces that articulate the different environments, and with the minimum necessary partitions, we work and project the void as the main element of the proposal. Likewise, the distributor on the upper floor is proposed as a diagonal, square-shaped void that, despite the simplicity of the whole, allows cross visuals between all the rooms, including the one on the rear façade from the staircase.

With the use of continuous materials and light colours, the aim is to obtain a bright, neutral and warm place at the same time, making use of the furniture and integrating it from the beginning of the project. The proposal values the space thanks to its simplicity, the different textures of the materials and the light, leaving aside any excess or ornament and focusing on satisfying the needs of its inhabitants.

All Around Lab. Architecture studio based in Barcelona and Madrid, founded in 2015 and led by Noelia de la Red and Jordi Ribas. Formed by a multidisciplinary team, they work on different scales in the fields of architecture, interior design and urban planning, with a transversal perspective and based on a strategy that is sensitive to the memory of the place and the environment. They believe that the poetics of a work is a consequence of the process, not an objective. They are committed to simple solutions to complex problems, the commitment to go beyond what is required and sustainability.

They have been awarded at the ASCER Awards (2022), the Catalan Architecture Exhibition (2019), as well as being finalists and selected in several editions of the FAD Awards (2018, 2016).
