Thinking that the most important thing is the confort of the cows and humans, as well as the facilities for the workers, it is projected this stable for cows. Funcionality and flexibility in the design process are its keypoints. Though the develop of the project was stoped during two years because of the economic crisis, this doesn't avoid to the architects to redefine the project following a line of innovative strategies looking after the enviroment.
One of the challenges was to achieve that the surrounding landscape goes into the stable and with the animals, achieving whit it, one more time, the most confortable situation as well as a feeling of being absolutely surrounded by the nature.
Memory of project.
Vejlskovgaard stable relate and conduct to an agriculture under pressure and heavy ongoing changes and challenges. The Danish agriculture needs to be redefined and architecture, landscape and branding have to be addressed together in a new way. The demands are needs for flexibility and the optimal animal and human conditions and sustainable solutions towards local environment and the production itself.
Our proposal for a new cow stable to Vejlskovgaard in Odder won followed by the honoring: “The proposal is wining because of it´s many visionary ideas with a focus on animal welfare and functionality in a flexible design” Adjustments and environmental issue was first on the agenda but in 2008 the overall economical crisis did put the process on hold. By Christmas 2010 the client did restart the process on new terms. We did redesign the initial ideas into the new conditions and ending up with a very redefined and balanced peace of architecture.
The new stable building and the milk production is organized in a star shaped ground plan consisting of 4 barns meeting in a joint physical and optical center. The spread out shape scale down the new building and is thought as an open gesture allowing the surround curvy landscape close to and into the building and the cows – anywhere You have a grand view in and out. The direct interference with the landscape and the existing farm and the close passing main road has been a main goal and issue to achieve throughout the entire creating process. The result is a new functional and symbolic center and a yard space connecting to the old farm, the production and the history.
A steel construction solution is obvious by its lightness and modifying opportunities. By solving the design challenges by modifying standard frames and elements the initial ideas for sustainable and flexibility was also gained. The screening or sidewall is primarily an automatic and movable stable curtain adding a layer of dynamics to the experience of the building over time. The covering is a pre insulated steel sandwich element with a dark grayish brown color on the outside and a light interior. The prefabricated steel panels for the façade and roof came in hole lengths and was precut for fast and minimum waste in mounting.
