The annual Emporis Skyscraper Awards, has been awarded on an international basis every year since 2000, unveiled ten winning a minimum height of 100 meters projects, from over 700 skyscrapers completed in 2019, with the new Lakhta Center in St. Petersburg, Russia taking the top spot this year.

Standing  462-meter-high, Lakhta Center designed by GORPROJECT and RMJM, in St. Petersburg, Russia, for natural gas giant Gazprom, it is the fourteenth tallest building in the world. As the northernmost supertall skyscraper, the building regulates extreme temperatures through a double skin façade.
The Lakhta Center is the first European skyscraper won again since 2013 the award. The Lakhta Center is not only the tallest building in Europe, the jury praised for its energy-efficient technologies.

"As the northernmost supertall skyscraper in the world, the building is exposed to extreme temperatures. A double skin façade prevents unnecessary heat loss and makes it extraordinarily energy efficient. In addition, thanks to the innovative use of infrared radiators, excess heat is not lost but fed back into the system."

Winning designers of the last two top titles in 2019 and 2018, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, still managed to score two awards this year with innovative high-rises in Singapore and Bangkok. Other architects winner previously as BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group (in 2017 with VIA 57 West) and Zaha Hadid Architects (in 2015 with Wangjing SOHO), were among this year's honorees again.

The Emporis Skyscraper Award is the world's most renowned prize for high-rise architecture. The primary criteria in awarding the prize are excellence in aesthetic and functional design. Every year, a jury of experts selects the winner. Buildings must have a minimum height of 100 meters and have been completed during the previous calendar year.
