A total of 19 cities agreed to form part of the ‘Shrinking cities’ programme and each one of them focused on a theme, such as new tactics in eco-friendly infrastructure, small-scale urban interventions, demolition and social activism objectives and economic development strategies such as tourism, education and high technology. Over the past eight years they have been working on their projects.
The operation was completed in October 2010 with an exhibition, IBA (International Urban Redevelopment Exhibition 2010), in the 19 cities, showcasing the results accomplished in each location through exhibitions, guided tours and awareness campaigns. The central Dessau-Roßlau exhibition featured a panoramic overview of the entire process.
The 19 cities that participated in the project are:
Aschersleben, Bernburg (Saale), Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Dessau-Roßlau, Halberstadt, Halle (Saale), Hansestadt Stendal, Köthen (Anhalt), Lutherstadt Eisleben, Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Magdeburg, Merseburg, Naumburg (Saale), Quedlinburg, Sangerhausen, Schönebeck (Elba), Staßfurt, Wanzleben, Weißenfels.
