The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has announced 28 winners of this year's Institute Honor Awards, including projects by OMA, Thomas Phifer and Kohn Pedersen Fox

The Institute Honor Awards program recognizes achievements for a broad range of architectural activity to elevate the general quality of architecture practice, establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, and inform the public of the breadth and value of architecture practice.

  • Olson Kundig Architects

The seven-story mixed-use building consists of five units of adaptable live-work space. Large steel-clad doors on the alley-facing façade can be opened with a custom-designed hand wheel and hinge, connected to a davit crane on the roof. This system makes it possible to lift large objects from the alley into each unit.

The new museum replicates the galleries in the old Paul Cret–designed facility but provides visitors with a light-filled, contemplative space. The inclusion of classrooms, conservation rooms, and an internal garden reflect founder Albert Barnes’s commitment to education and the visual connection between art and nature.

A corrugated steel roof, wood deck, and aluminum bar grating panels combine to create an open, light structure that seems to meld with the river. The design of the pavilion was closely integrated with the landscape architect’s vision for Long Dock Park, a former brownfield site.

In this project, the keystone of a master plan for an uninspired office park in New Jersey, a 1980s office building was transformed by a 10,000-square-foot addition floated from the fourth floor of the original building. The architecture works with the landscape to create a user-friendly site that encourages social interaction and a healthier, more sustainable environment.

The highly energy-efficient addition features motorized operable windows that allow the mechanical systems to be shut off completely. Open-plan design studios, classrooms, and faculty offices encourage cross-discipline exchanges among students and faculty in the college’s four departments.

The design strategy for this facility, rooted in the simplicity of regional farm structures and local building traditions, explored applying LEED® criteria in an agricultural context. The barn buildings use prefabricated, kit-of-parts construction systems.

Milstein Hall provides 47,000 square feet of new space for Cornell’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning. A large horizontal plate connects Milstein with two existing buildings and extends over a street to create a connection with a third.

This renovation and expansion of Eero Saarinen’s complex at Yale preserved the original concrete and stone exterior and added 25,000 square feet in a new underground addition. A sunken courtyard brings daylight into the addition, and wooden terraces extending from the dining halls include rain-fed water features.

The New York Public Library, an iconic example of the Beaux-Arts style, was perhaps the most important commission of the firm of Carrère and Hastings. In preparation for the building’s centennial in 2011, the design team was retained to investigate the exterior envelope, recommend treatments, and oversee implementation.

Saint Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church is the result of a transformation of an existing metal shop building into a sanctuary and fellowship hall. The original structure is clad in a new skin, obscuring and refining the original gabled form. Although a small structure, its bold form makes it visible and recognizable from the nearby interstate.

The Vancouver Convention Centre West showcases deep currents of thought in the Vancouver community about sustainable design and civic involvement. The conceptual goal of the 22-acre waterfront development is to close the gap between the natural ecosystem surrounding Vancouver and the human ecosystem concentrated at the downtown core.
