"The new Robot Science Museum (RSM)... is not only going to exhibit robots but actually from the design, manufacturing to construction and services robots will be in charge. In other words, the Robot Science Museum will start its first exhibition with its own construction by robots on site."
Architect and MAA founder Melike Altınışık
When completed, the project will sit alongside a Photographic Art Museum, both located within the Changbai New Economic Center, a future cultural center for Chang-dong in the northern part of the South Korean capital.
During the museum's construction process, the robots will not only are as the primary building agents for the project but will also be used as visuals to help know to the general public about robots.
Robots will assemble the museum’s curved metal façade and will be the authors of variations of 3D printing techniques, molding, welding, polishing, and assembly. Drones will be used to site mapping and inspections. Meanwhile, another team of robots will 3D print concrete elements for the surrounding landscape.
Construction of the museum is expected to begin in early 2020, with completion and the official opening earmarked for late 2022. According to Altinisik and his team, using robots is not only a giant step towards building construction, but it also allows for the project to save time and money. There are many architecture firm exploring the possibilities of robotic construction and design, Neri Oxman and her team at MIT and Archi-Union Architects have worked with robots and their time-saving construction abilities.
