Based in Valencia architecture studio, Mentrestant, led by Irene Civera Balaguer, Jorge Navarro Carpio, Eva Civera Balaguer, Jose Sambartolomé Guanter, was commissioned to design Paqui House located in La Pobla de Vallbona, to 22.6 km from Valencia, in Spain.

This construction has a great link with the place where it is located and can be seen in the rooms that make up the space since it follows the architectural typology of the traditional Valencian country house.
The house designed by Mentrestant has two floors that make up the space, the ground floor is composed of various rooms intended for the daily use of its inhabitants. On the other hand, the first floor has a different role, because its use is more private.

Paqui's House is generated by a mix between pre-existing and new construction elements due to maintaining the masonry walls and building new floors. Being able to differentiate the pre-existence of the extension.

Description of project by Mentrestant

The Paqui's House is located in La Pobla de Vallbona, a municipality located in the Camp del Turia region, a territory closely linked to the countryside and agricultural work. The house is located in the medieval historic center of the town and it is estimated that the construction could have belonged to the part of an old convent. Already in the 20th century, we find the current construction, a typical Valencian country house with its own rooms located on the ground floor and an upper floor with sloping ceilings used to store the harvest.

The project works to rehabilitate the existing construction to adapt it to the needs of the users, preserving at all times the typology and spatiality of the original dwelling. Through a large wooden gate, we access the patio of the house that serves as a transition between the street and the interior of the house. On the ground floor, we find those spaces with the greatest activity and traffic; the living-dining room and kitchen-laundry room seek to extend the interior towards the patio. The upper floor is used for those rooms with greater intimacy and privacy; three rooms of different dimensions and characteristics seek to satisfy present and future needs, being able to house varied activities.

The house maintains the masonry walls of the facades, walls with great cultural and constructive value, and builds new floors with wooden joists and rib metal floors to comply with current regulations. The metallic and suspended staircase orders the interior and tries to give lightness to a small-sized interior, featuring the walls. The facades show the intervention, evidencing in the treatment of the walls the existing of the enlarged; the traditional walls are protected with a waterproof lime mortar, the new facing is accentuated by its uniformity, and the openings with wooden shutters try to recover elements that are sometimes forgotten.

Mentrestant is an Architectural cooperative established in La Pobla de Vallbona, Valencia and founded by Irene Civera Balaguer, Jorge Navarro Carpio, Eva Civera Balaguer, Jose Sambartolomé Guanter. Mentrestant is the way they conceive the profession where what is important is the process and not the final image. Currently, their lines of work are focused on four axes: housing, urbanism, research, and sustainability.

They work to build a dynamic and versatile architecture capable of adapting to the needs and desires of people. A close and social architecture where the way of living is at the center.

From a local framework, their architecture is based on study and reflection to propose innovative projects that respect tradition. A responsible construction with the available resources and their immediate environment.

Recently they were awarded the first prize for the construction of the pilot project of public, innovative, and sustainable housing in Castellón de la Plana. Public competition promoted by the Vicepresidencia Segona i Conselleria d'Habitatge i Arquitectura Bioclimàtica.
