London-based Australian artist Flynn Talbot developed for London Design Festival 2017, in the V&A Museum’s Prince Consort Gallery, a mirrored light installation that plays with perception, transforming its interior space. This immersive installation, called the 'Reflection Room' is a proposal by Talbot covering the space using 56 custom-made stretch membrane Barrisol panels in gloss black with bright orange and blue LED lights woven into them, as a nod to the history of the room.
‘I conceived the idea standing in the gallery, and wanted to add my story on top of the beautiful architecture but not take it over. With all of my work, I want to create new experiences using light that build a connection between people and place,‘ explains Flynn Talbot
Flynn Talbot ensures his design references the history of the room itself, which once displayed over 30,000 textile samples. In the 'Reflection Room' as visitors walk down the expansive hall, they become more and more immersed and truly embraced within the installation. Their silhouettes and their movement create spectacular, fragmented views for other visitors, showing a unique aspect in each visit and look.
Reflection Room is one of the many installations on show at the V&A during London Design Festival 2017, which starts today and continues until 24 September 2017.
