The architect Elvira Solana explores the use of pigment and image to transform one of the most iconic homes in Madrid. Through 5 acrylic murals he moves the property from the center of the capital to a peninsula of Mediterranean air and converts its 350 m² into 10,000. His trompe l'oeil managed to alter the context and perception of space in an exercise that aims to recover the dialogue-lost at the beginning of the twentieth century-between architecture and painting.
When, in 1960, the architects Cano Lasso, Moreno Barberá, González de la Buelga, and Joya Castro proposed the construction of one of Madrid's most iconic residential buildings, painting and architecture had already emancipated and reality remained subject to the context.
However, at a time when recovering old techniques is the channel to adapt any discipline to its contemporary uses, Solana has proposed experimenting with artifices, ornaments and symbolisms as resources to expand the property.
Using the painting as an architectural element and not just as a material, the artist has opened five new windows that show small fractions of her work of extension.
The result is that through pigments, plans and models it has transformed the qualities of a space. But, essentially, he has managed to alter his perception.
To carry out this project, the artist has been locked for more than 5 months in a house in the center of Madrid, carrying out her graphic exploration of architecture. The work, ephemeral, is inaugurated next Wednesday, July 4 before the interior of the building is demolished * to return to - another - real state.
The study will remain open during the month of July and may be visited by appointment prior to the start of the renovation works.
