That fantastic ray of light spilled on the wall at the back of the great nave of the Merida museum, has become an immortal image, the one that best represents the excellent career of one of the leading architectural photographers at the beginning of our democracy.
On February 16, the renowned photographer Lluís Casals passed away at 67 years of age. The sphere of architecture and photography were left without one of the greatest exponents both nationally and internationally, because as also photographer Pep Rigol said: "Lluís Casals es uno de los representantes más importantes no solo de la fotografía española actual, sino también de la europea".
Lluís Casals was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1954 and thanks to his work and collaborations with different architects, he was one of the leading photographers during the decades of the '70s,' 80s and '90s of the last century. With his work, he gave visibility to Spanish architecture, and the strength of his images was fundamental for many architects to consolidate his career and achieve the image for its recognition both in Spain and abroad.

Lluís Casals' work was reflected from one of the most crucial and delicate moments for Spain: the Transition. His photographs offered a new look at the buildings and public roads of the moment. Some images gave the viewer the possibility to observe beyond the daily routine of looking.
A man admired and respected by his professional colleagues, his dedication to a job well done stood out. Lluís Casals looked for the ideal light, the precise moment and worked with space, thus, the photographer obtained an image that reflected the best version of that moment.
Casals' shots produced images that reflected the best version of that moment. That is why many of the national architecture studios trusted in his professionalism, aware that beyond a simple photo session, Lluís would give life to the building, removing it from the coldness that could characterize him.

Lluís Casals
Lluís Casals i Coll. (Barcelona 1954 - Barcelona16 de febrero de 2021) Fotógrafo barcelonés especializado en fotografía de arquitectura e interiorismo. Casals, since 1975, worked in the documentation of projects and works of various architecture studios in Spain and collaborated in numerous specialized national and international publications.
He was a member of the jury for the 2002 FAD Architecture and Interior Design Awards and the 2007 Lux Photography Awards, within the Architecture and Interior Design category. He was a professor of the Master in Art Photography and Technique at the Polytechnic University of Valencia
