The creation of Casa Bloc was one of the first steps toward dignifying workers' living conditions. As a result of the Civil war, the project was cut short.
Now, after careful restoration by the Institut Català del Sòl and Institut de Cultura de Barcelona, through the Disseny Hub Barcelona, the doors to apartment number 1/11 are open and furnished just as its creators had originally wanted. Come discover how the brilliant avant-garde minds of the past dreamed living could be.
In Barcelona, it is the first example of a building intended for workers' housing raised in functional terms. The Casa Bloc is a project promoted during the Second Republic. Those responsible for its construction were the architects Josep Lluís Sert (1902-1983), Josep Torres Clavé (1906-1939) and Joan Baptista Subirana (1904-1978).
The action carried out in 2011 by the Barcelona Institute of Culture and the Catalan Land Institute consisted of returning the 1/11 dwelling to its initial state, the one it had in 1939, as well as completing the work on the façade and the corridor, which were pending in the previous rehabilitation works (1997-2008).
Starting March 20th, Apartment 1/11 at Casa Bloc will be open to the public. Catalan architects of the Second Republic, brought together by the Grup d’Arquitectes i Tècnics Catalans per al Progrés de l’Arquitectura Contemporània (GATCPAC), proposed a new way of living that was just, accomodated co-existence and defended the collective identity.
