"Holocene" is one of the songs of the American indie folk singer Bon Iver, stage name for Justin Vernon. Named second best song of 2011 on the Pitchfork list, Bon Iver explained the title of the song in an interview for the magazine Mojo:
"It's partly named after the (geological) era, but it's also the name of a bar in Portland where I had a dark night of the soul. [...] the title is a metaphor for when you're not doing well. But it's also a song about redemption and realizing that you're worth something; that you're special and not special at the same time."
The video for the song debuted on the National Geographic Channel, is situated in the region of Vik, Iceland, and was directed by Nabil Elderkin, professional photographer and director of films and music videos.
