The structure and support elements come from the scaffolding systems. On that structure they develop habitable grafts, which can be interpreted as work sheds, with a simple housing program, in the different platforms and heights.
Project description by Todo Por la praxis
From Todo por la Praxis, we are in the middle of researching and putting into practice the artistic residence in context. We understand by residencies in context, those that propose programs where the artist connects with the territory and the community.
We are interested in investigating the residential space and the resident in a condition that facilitates his or her proximity to the context in an immersive way. On the other hand, we also find it important to rethink the residential space and its associated program in order to work on new models that mediate and facilitate a relational condition. To this end, we are opening up a line of research that will allow us to explore new formats and strategies that explore new situations.
When we refer to the context in the artistic field, we are not only referring to the physical environment, but to something broader, related, above all, to the social fabric and its cultural construction. Working from this perspective, it becomes necessary to problematize and share experiences linked to various questions that challenge us today: What challenges does a residency in context present? What logic runs through them? What role does the institution play?
As a starting point, from TXP we propose a proposal that makes this contextual condition possible by implementing a device in public space. In a first approach we propose to insert these devices associated to public sculptures, parasitizing them, as a strategic place to work in context. This theoretical approach is a strategy for the normative hacking and on the other hand articulates a relationship with the surrounding environment.
In a beta phase we developed an indoor prototype in the space 'Instituto do it your self', being the first activation of this device, within the program of Aid to Spaces of contemporary creation 2018/2019, of the City council of Madrid. Despite being a laboratory phase, we propose that this device starts from the conditions set out in the initial hypothesis and is designed to accommodate an artistic residency program in public space. On the other hand, we also propose that the device should be transportable and dismountable, so that it can travel in different contexts.
In order to project this prototype, the initial condition of being an artifact that parasitizes or is grafted onto public sculptures is also taken into account, so it is articulated with a formal language close to the processes of restoration of monuments. The elements of structure and support are with a system of scaffolding and platforms, usually used in these processes. On this structure, habitable grafts are developed, which can be interpreted as work booths. Here we deploy a simple housing program, which is developed in the different platforms and heights, enabling a minimum living space, a production space, and a space of relational and affective component.
The 'Monument Residence' project is based on a programme of activities, within a framework of Do-Think research extended into an itinerant programme that is structured around five lines:
1 Do-Think workshops, where a process of construction and collaborative learning is opened. 2 Do it your self workshops, for the transfer and exchange of knowledge for applications and the development of gadgets.
3 Artists in Residence Program, to support production and research processes in context.
4 Researchers program for the development of spatial and organizational strategies to explore new models of 'Monument Residence'.
5 Meeting of experiences, to generate a framework of dialogue between artists and residency managers to jointly evaluate and analyze the residency programs in context.
