The construction of viewing structures in the romantic setting of the Czech mountains has been a tradition since the 19th century, when tourism first began to flourish there. A contemporary version of this traditional watch tower – Tower Dolní Morava or Skywalk – is the latest project of the Brno-based studio Zdeněk Fránek Architects.

The studio Zdeněk Franek Architects have joined forces with construction specialists Taros Nova to create an impressive skywalk route, an organic structure that forms an artificial mountain landscape located close to the popular ski resort of Dolní Morava, in the Orlické Mountains, at the end of the last year.

The architect designed an impressively irregular skywalk which rises at an altitude of 1,116m, an ellipse-shaped wooden path twisted around the three main tower, with a triangular cross section embedded in reinforced concrete foundations. The structure is composed of rectangular wooden beams mounted on steel trusses. 'It is rare to use timber on a construction of this magnitude,' explains Zdeněk Fránek.

"The Trail Among The Clouds is a conceptual building, and it offers visitors an intense sensation of walking in the clouds and an experience of a space above the landscape. There are various attractions including a slide, nets and nests in the building for those who seek adventure or entertainment. The entrance building is of a slightly oval shape much like a rowboat. Its construction is made of glued wooden beams set into a wooden grid supported by columns. The architectural approach was for the building to blend with it’s unique surrounding rather then to disturb it. This was the reason for using wood for the major part of the construction, and making the rails and mounts as subtle as possible," said Zdeněk Fránek.

On the way to the top viewing platform – at a height of 45m above ground – visitors climb a looping walkway which offers a constantly changing view of the surrounding landscape.

Dates.- design 2014, project 2014, completion 2015.
