R21 arkitekter designed a house in a residential area of Berg, a neighborhood on the west side of Oslo, in Norway. The narrow-shaped land is located away from the roads that form the circulation network of the residential area. The plot is characterized by the unevenness that is generated on its surface, which allows the architects to develop different strategies.

The architects use the strategies used in the adjacent housing projects in order to follow a morphological rhythm. The new home is developed in a homogeneous, clear and precise building, with a narrower façade orientation towards the road, which uses the slope of the land to its advantage, thanks to its elongated shape.
Villa Berg, designed by the R21 arkitekter architecture studio, is a single-family residential building that is developed on a narrow volume that allows a private and closed outdoor space to be formed between the neighboring houses. The open courtyard is formed by brick walls, an outdoor kitchen and a swimming pool.

All the rooms on the first floor are connected to the patio, which generates a feeling of greater spaciousness for the inhabitants of the house. The materials and colors were chosen according to those used for the construction of the adjacent buildings, red brick, copper and oak are the materials that contribute to creating a timeless house with a unique atmosphere.

Project description by R21 arkitekter

The house in Nils Lauritssøns vei is located on a narrow plot in a residential area on Berg in Oslo. It is placed in a secluded position, withdrawn from the road. The building has a homogeneous, clear and precise shape. It follows the rhythm of the neighboring houses in the area with a narrow facade facing the road. A long body takes advantage of the sloping terrain on the site.

The narrow building volume contributes to shaping a private, enclosed outdoor space in-between the neighboring houses. The courtyard is given its form by encircling brick walls, an outdoor kitchen and a pool. All rooms on the first floor are connected to the courtyard contributing to a more spacious feel. An atrium brings light down to the ground floor and creates a rich inner world.

The project har clear references to the neighboring garden city through the choice of materials and colors used. The plinth is cast in red pigmented concrete which is able to meet and adapt to the terrain. Solid and durable materials such as red brick, copper and oak are used to contribute to a timeless house with a unique atmosphere.
