The book "Contemporary Architecture in Japan: New Territories" is the result of the homonym International Workshop held in the School of Architecture of Valladolid from 19th to 30th November 2012. The book is a compilation of various research projects, conferences and workshops by authors both Spanish and Japanese, with a clear evidence of the diversity of perspectives on the elements of Japanese architecture.

The book, edited by Pedro Luis Gallego and Pilar Garcés through Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid is the result of the research by seven Spanish and three Japanese architects and the works carried out at the International Workshop organized in 2012 by the School of Architecture Valladolid. In the publication, Japan is studied in depth and from many different perspectives such as nature, city, housing or the place through essays and projects in which Japanese culture has played an important role.

In recent decades the Japanese architecture has been a significant event in the Western world due to issues such as the relationship between architecture and nature, creating intermediate spaces, redefining the public and the private or the reciprocity between residential units and the city. The need of the western architecture to expand into new territories to overcome the contradictions implicit in the discontinuous development of architectural, urban and social structures requires a dynamic to which are not indifferent to the experiences in the Japanese context.

The book has been produced with the participation of José Juan Barba, Juan Antonio Cortes, Yayoi Kawamura, Marta Rodriguez, Enric Massip-Bosch, Pedro Luis Gallego, Pilar Garces, Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama, Jin Taira, Norihiko Dan and Jose Manuel González Vázquez.

The celebration of the Dual Year Spain-Japan and Japan-Spain in 2013 and 2014, has led to make this experience of intersecting glances, recognising the nature of the cultural mix in a global context which must favour the exchange of ideas.
