The project decisions were not only guided by aesthetics and functionality but also the consideration of environmental factors, as well as the dimensional delimitations of the narrow plot, where every centimeter had to be taken advantage of.
Description of project by C2D
Edificio Turín is a four-story residential building in Colonia Juárez, one of the most architecturally rich neighborhoods in Mexico City. The project consists of four apartments, each on a complete floor and with different typologies.
One of the most important objectives of this project was to densify and make the most of the urban property that was in disuse. In addition, contributing to the constant regeneration of the area through a subtle integration with the historical context was the main criterion that guided the composition and design decisions. This was achieved through the careful study of the use of local and timeless materials, such as concrete, steel, and stone, materials that by their nature were not in contrast with the use of quarries and other stone materials of the adjacent buildings and the immediate context.
The vegetation is another important factor for the adequacy of the building with the context, since utilizing a planter on the facade the building becomes very friendly on a pedestrian scale, likewise, the tree in front of the building plays a very important role since in spring and summer the building goes unnoticed to the eye.
Both vertical and horizontal circulations play a very important role in the project; they function as a distribution axis between private and common areas in each apartment and their location in the general scheme helps to have efficient access to the building from the street as well as to each apartment.
The architectural design was done integrally, seeking not only aesthetics and functionality but also the consideration of environmental factors. The design and distribution of the facilities were designed to improve energy efficiency. The use of patios at the back and in the central part of the building helped us to create naturally ventilated and illuminated spaces. Water collection on terraces and patios is reused in the building for non-domestic use.
Another challenge presented by this project was the limited amount of land space, both in the project and in construction logistics, so every decision had to consider taking advantage of every centimeter, achieving good quality living spaces, and an efficient construction process.
