The Portuguese architecture studio João Tiago Aguiar developed the rehabilitation of an apartment in the heart of Lisbon. The project tries to eliminate the previous compartments of the apartment (previously some offices) and some of its rooms to create a fluid space adapted to current life.

All social spaces are illuminated by means of large perforations in the ceiling that simulate skylights on the roof. This location has also allowed the possibility of completely reorganizing interior spaces of the house, and being able to light and ventilate all the rooms in a simple way.
The openings in the roof slab allowed the João Tiago Aguiar studio to completely redistribute the interior spaces of the house. In the eastern part of the house, the main suite and a bedroom were located. On the other hand, the entire social area was located at the back of the house, allowing you to take advantage of a huge already existing terrace.

Regarding the materials used in the rehabilitation, the wooden flooring used throughout the house stands out to give more comfort to the user, except in the two bathrooms, where the solution used is microcement. In addition, other design elements were introduced such as the furniture that houses the fireplace and the television or the wine cellar in the living room.

Description of project by João Tiago Aguiar

Located in Lisbon's center, the vacant and very compartmentalized apartment, which had previously been an office, has undergone a profound renovation. The project aimed to reduce the number of interior rooms, making the space more fluid and suitable for modern life.

The old office has been transformed into a T2 typology apartment with plenty of natural lighting thanks to the air shaft and its location on the top floor of the building. This advantage allowed to rearrange its whole interior layout.

On the east façade there is a balcony/terrace which extends along its full length. In this area, were placed the master suite, with a walking-closet, and a bedroom. It was designed a new bathroom for the suite, perfectly adapted to daily dynamics, while the other existing bathroom has passed through an intervention to optimize the space by repositioning the sanitary equipment and by changing the cladding completely.

On the other hand, the entire social area and the kitchen were placed at the back to benefit from the already existing large terrace where a barbecue was designed. This open-air space emerges as a natural extension of the interior social area which has become more wide, versatile, and favored.

A hallway, with more noble and spacious proportions, makes the connection between the entrance and the social and private areas. Either in the hall and the living room, the ceiling, with its large light circles, highlights and revives both spaces.

To improve the comfort and efficiency of the apartment, all the existing mosaic flooring has been replaced by wood flooring, except in the social and bedroom support bathroom which was cladded with micro-cement. This material was also used both in the kitchen, open to the living room and in the barbecue. Also noteworthy is the hydraulic mosaic that is found exclusively in the shower of the suite's bathroom.

There were introduced other custom-designed elements such as the bookcase that accommodates a fireplace and tv, or the wine cellar next to the dining table.
