The project, which will be characterized by two large volumes, is articulated with other smaller spaces such as interior gardens and recreational spaces, with which the architects want to pay special attention to citizens, reducing the scale of the intervention.
Burgos and Vicente explained the reason for his name, Campo de Retamas: «It is a work of Sánchez-Ferlosio, composed of small texts, and it seemed to us that it expressed very well the philosophy of this project, which is a large building full of small places ».
The project proposes a central building of 19 heights as a general hospital, and a second of 15 for the mother and child. The hospital complex maintains its unit at the base by standing on lobbies connected to each other, which will give access to an area of 320,000 square meters, which represents an increase of 72 percent over the current area.
The selected project, according to the jury, is the proposal closest to the functional plan in which more than 700 hospital professionals have worked through 12 working groups.
The Maternity Tower is preserved as a historical legacy of the hospital and the city of Madrid, on which an integral remodeling will be carried out to adapt it to the new image of the hospital complex. Its new function will be to house the administrative units, maintenance and technical services, archiving and documentation, as well as the Pathological Anatomy and Occupational Risk Prevention Services.
