Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and Residencia de Estudiantes de Madrid present this exhibition, organized by the curators José Garcia-Velasco, Almudena de la Cueva and Margarita Márquez Padorno, commemorates the centenary of the opening of the Ladies Residence of Madrid. The building, which housed the female equivalent of the well-known Residencia de Estudiantes, despite having not been sufficiently valued during the XXth century, represented one of the main Spanish benchmark in the progress and Europeanisation of the Spanish society at the time.
The Ladies Residence, promoted from the late nineteenth century by the men and women of the Intitución de Libre Enseñanza, allowed many women of the time the possibility, previously non-existent, of a high level of professional development, even equating the man's one. This institution was one of the main organizations that placed Spain as one of the most advanced countries in the aspect within its European context. The exhibition recollects the legacy of the institution and resumes its adventorous path, to promote its knowledge, so far in the background, among the general public.
