Lap Pool House, designed by Greek architect Aristides Dallas, is located in Tinos island, Greece. A summer retreat integrated into the island’s rugged landscape, marked by an elongated, narrow pool that juts out cantilever from the building dug into the hillside.

Greek photographer & visual artist Mariana Bisti has documented poetically this house with a short film that marries architecture, music, dance, and paying attention to the concept remarked by Goethe: architecture is frozen music that comes alive with human motion.
Mariana Bisti has choreographed three members of the Greek National Synchronised Swimming Team, both inside and outside the water, resulting in a sensual and sensitive audiovisual narrative that transforms the typical architectural ways of documentation and evocatively reframes the house’s architecture in terms of motion, light, and time.

What is remarkable in the filmmaker Bisti's carefully staged setups, is that the dancing figures neither dominate the spaces they occupy nor are they overpowered by them. She a striking balance between the human cast and the architecture, transforming the three dancers into integral parts of the building fabric, as classical caryatids.

Project description by Aristides Dallas Architects

With inspiration from the geophysical phenomena which form the island’s character, the residence in Tinos island is a reinterpretation of the impact between stone and air. When these two elements are found in conflict with each other, depending on which one prevails, either guarding stone risers or cavities of the stone envelope, carved by the wind as if from the skilled craftsman’s hand, are created.

In any case, the outcome is distinctly apparent in the natural surrounding while at the same time it turns into a natural landmark.

This proactive minimalistic residence describes these special qualities as well as the simultaneous relation of exposure and introversion, thus forming hospitality risers and cavities which emerge within and over the landscape. At the same time, it distinguishes itself from the landscape thanks to its materialities, like a crack at the natural terrain. In this way, independent spaces in full exposure are created, while the ones directed towards the internal part, are totally protected. The linear water feature among them introduces an additional factor, fluidity.

Conclusively, the residence is a reference to the qualities of the coefficients which compose the natural landscape while it also attempts to restate the continuous interaction among the forces of nature.
