'A rough diamond' is the name of the project developed by Estuyo Studio for the new headquarters of the Boa Mistura studio, the famous collective of artists who transform the city around the world with their graffiti-based painting projects.

The project takes place in what was an old car repair shop located in the Madrid neighborhood of Puente de Vallecas to shelter artists, using a few raw materials, such as metal, wood, brick, and concrete.

The new space occupies the ground floor of a building built in the 60s. The old car repair shop is crossed longitudinally, obtaining two different areas (a study area and a storage area) that converge in a new paint shop in the back of the premises.
Each of the two areas presents a spatial sequence from more public to more private, reaching the workshop, the true nucleus of Boa Mistura's activity. The Estuyo Studio's project occurred in exceptional conditions since the confinement as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic occurred when the reform works were about to end.

The installation of a radiant and cooling floor by aerothermal provides the necessary comfort to work in spaces whose heights vary between 4 and 6m in height. The rest of the materials of the intervention are left seen in the rough, from vestiges of previous lives of the premises, through the new partitions, (made of concrete and ceramic blocks) to the carpentry elements, both wood, and metal, which present its natural finishes.

Description of project by Estuyo Studio

Located in Puente de Vallecas’ neighborhood, next to Madrid’s M-30 beltway, the new Boa Mistura’s headquarters occupy the ground floor of a 1960’s building.

A TAILOR-MADE SUIT

A former car repair workshop, the volume is cut lengthwise and divided into two different environments (an office area and a warehouse) that converge in a new workshop at the back of the plot. Each of both areas present specific spatial sequences, from more public to more private, concluding in the workshop, that becomes the real core of Boa Mistura’s activity.

A ROUGH DIAMOND

The installation of the underfloor heating and cooling system powered by aerothermal energy provides artists the necessary comfort to work in spaces from 4 up to 6m high. The rest of the construction materials are exposed. Vestiges from previous lives of the building, new partition walls (made with concrete blocks and brick) as well as all the new woodwork and locksmith elements are displayed with their natural finishings.
