The restaurant "El Camino" designed by Zooco estudio, in front of the beach "La Segunda",the city of Santander, Spain. It serves as the setting for the new asian-inspired restaurant.

The restaurant is characterized by following the traditional lines found in its Japanese counterparts, with a central bar as the protagonist of the space, and the tables arranged around it next to the walls, where the benches are fixed to the walls.
The project were designed by Zooco estudio, in which we can identify three different spaces, two interiors, and one exterior. In the interior at the back of the restaurant are the toilets and kitchens, in the central space of "El Camino", we find the bar and the tables and benches spread along the walls and finally a covered outdoor space, which functions as a terrace and protects the central space from the sun.

The materials and shapes used in the restaurant continually evoke the sea and the marine animals that inhabit it, the curved shapes represent the waves that are found a few meters away, the walls are made of fabrics in the shape of scales and the floor has a pavement that evokes the sand of the beach. All the materials and lighting have been carefully chosen to immerse us in the experience, together with the products served and the location of the premise.

Description of project by Zooco estudio

Our client proposes an Asian restaurant in which the protagonist will be raw fish, in its different versions, and also wants a relaxed, warm, and cozy but different and unique atmosphere.

The restaurant is located in the Sardinero in Santander, overlooking the beach "La Segunda". One of the most emblematic areas of the city, where the sea and the beach are the protagonists.

With these conditions we propose a design that wants to bring the marine world to the premises, but far from the clichés of the imaginary of the sea. We propose an abstraction materialized in textures and shapes that remind us of this world, as present in the environment as in the food.

All this is translated into a curved geometry in reference to the waves, which are arranged in 3 bands.

A lower band that houses all the circular benches and the bar, a hard and resistant intermediate band for the walls, and an upper band that houses the ambient lighting and the bar counter.

On a material level, instead of falling into the obvious of the marine, noble, timeless, and warm materials are chosen, such as wood and clay, which refer to the Asian-Japanese aesthetic.

In this way, we make reference to the typology of the Japanese (Asian) restaurant in the material rather than the formal.

From bottom to top, we have the natural wood and textiles in reference to the curvilinear world mentioned above; the geometry of clay scales, in reference to the skins of fish; and the plastic cylinders, transparent and reflective surfaces representing the shimmering waters of the sea.

Lastly, on the floor plan, we present a terrazzo that perfectly fulfills the idea of a sandy floor, completing this marine ideology.

On a programmatic level, there is a covered outdoor space that acts as a filter for the restaurant, with which it is sought to enhance the excellent views of the Sardinero that the establishment enjoys.

Zooco Estudio is a young architectural firm founded in 2008 by Miguel Crespo Picot, Javier Guzmán Benito and Sixto Martín Martínez, with head offices in Madrid and Santander. Zooco Estudio´s philosophy is facing each project, from interior interventions to large structures building, through the same creative process.

Developing projects with different scales, they realize that architectural decisions are always the same: to create spaces that give response to needs and environment, always based on the generation of a clear concept as the base of the project.

This vision of architecture and the flexibility to adapt to different projects, has made them understand practice at a time of social and economic crisis.

Zooco Estudio tries to project with fine materials and simple shapes to achieve a timeless and functional aesthetic. They always search for neutral spaces and projects that last over the years. With this objective, they combine the research into new materials and systems, with the knowledge of traditional processes.

Throughout their professional career they have won different prizes and contests, among which the Civic Cultural Center of Soto de la Marina (Cantabria) and the Performing Arts Center in Verín (Galicia). They combine large-scale works with the creation and renovation of spaces in the contract, retail and residential sectors, highlighting projects such as the restaurant La Maruca, Orgaz and Atrapallada, or hotels such as Hotel Azul or Flamingo.
