Yesterday marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of CIEN AÑOS DE SOLEDAD/ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE, a key novel in the history of literature, one of the most important in the 20th century and one of the most fascinating literary adventures of all time.

On the occasion of the anniversary, Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial commissioned the transfer of the magical realism of the work of the Colombian Gabriel García Márquez (Arataca, 1927 - Mexico City 2014), winner of the Nobel prize of 82, to an edition accompanied by the Images of the Chilean illustrator Luisa Rivera who currently lives in London. An edition that is accompanied by a typography created by the author's son, Gonzalo García Barcha, to which Luisa Rivera has contributed by decorating the capitulants.

I can finally share the news! I illustrated ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel García Márquez, for Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, an edition that celebrates the 50th anniversary of its original publication. The book has a typography designed by Gonzalo García Barcha, son of ‘Gabo’. I still feel it is a dream! Thanks to the team of Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial for entrusting me this amazing task: Claudio López de LamadridNora GrosseMarta Borrell. It is one of my favorite books, so it’s an honor to be part of this celebration. Available in bookstores on April 9th, day in which I will also publish a post here, in my blog, with the process and the experience.

- What inspires you? I draw inspiration from nature, folk culture, literature, as well as magic realism, a genre where the supernatural becomes an everyday occurrence in the storytelling process.

- What is your favorite thing about illustration? I’ve always loved the idea of telling stories or communicate with images. It is something that transcends languages and it is very primal for humankind. Also, I love that every time that I start an illustration, whether it’s for a client or a personal work, is a complete new challenge. Every day is different and exciting, which is a gift in today’s world.

The best tribute to Gabo is to read it. The edition is already in the bookstores.
