The CSCAE has announced the 2017 Spanish Architecture Prize, ex-aequo. Every two years, the participating projects are proposed by different institutions, so it is usually already known, in other recent awards. On this occasion the winners are:

Museum of Royal Collections in Madrid.

Authors: Mansilla y Tuñón Arquitectos. Presented by Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid.

Palace of Congresses and Hotel. Palma de Mallorca.

Authors: Francisco Mangado – Mangado y Asociados. Presented by Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos Vasco Navarro.

 
"... before the difficulty of a contemporary intervention in a historical context as the whole of the Royal Palace of Madrid and the purpose of undertaking an architectural exercise that solves the topographical and landscape difficulty of the west side of the city, the Museum of Real Collections is capable of assuming a massive confluence of visitors and reinforcing pedestrian connections through a solid and coherent solution. The jury has also valued the capacity of the Palacio de Congresos de, in view of the difficulty of undertaking a monumental scale in the first coastline and to tackle two situations as different as the vision from the sea and the urban experience, to face these challenges by giving the interior a continuous succession of articulated spaces for the transit of a great public confluence..."
 
The jury also wanted to mention the projects of the Sala Beckett, International Obrador de Dramaturgia in Barcelona by Flores & Prats Arquitectos, presented by the Barcelona City Council and the Electrical Assembly Industry in Don Benito, Badajoz by the architect José María Sánchez García, presented by the Official College of Architects of Extremadura.

The Spanish Architecture Prize

The Prize of Spanish Architecture was created in 1993, under the Presidency of the Honor of S.A.R. The Prince of Asturias, considering it of interest to publicly announce the quality of the works of architecture that are made in Spain and which are considered worthy of recognition for their architectural uniqueness, their innovative contribution and their paradigmatic quality built.

The jury of the 2017 Spanish Architecture Prize has been presided by Jordi Ludevid i Anglada, presidente del CSCAE, and integrated by Francisco Javier Martín Ramiro, subdirector general del Arquitectura y Edificación, from Dirección General de Arquitectura, Vivienda y Suelo del Ministerio de Fomento, Amando Cuellas Pestaña, subdirector general de Obras del Organismo Autónomo Gerencia de Infraestructuras y Equipamientos de Educación y Cultura del  Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes, Carlos Miranda Barroso, Dean of Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Castilla y León-Este, appointed by el Pleno del CSCAE e Inmaculada Esteban Maluenda, architect appointed by the Pleno del CSCAE, also,  Eloy Algorri García, Secretario General del CSCAE, who has acted as secretary of the Jury.

In 1992 Emilio Tuñón Álvarez (1958) and Luis M. Mansilla (1959) founded the firm MANSILLA + TUÑÓN ARQUITECTOS, awarded with the MIES VAN DER ROHE PRIZE 2007 (Prize for Contemporary Architecture of the European Union), National Prize for Spanish Architecture 2003, FAD Prize 2001.

Emilio Tuñón and Luis M. Mansilla are titular professors of the Department of Architectural Projects in Madrid. They have been professors in a number of universities, among which are the Graduate School of Design in Harvard, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne, the New School of Architecture in Puerto Rico and the Städelschule in Frankfurt. They are currently giving clases in the School of Architecture of Princeton University.

In 1993 they founded the cooperative of thought CIRCO, coming out with a publication under the same title, and which has been awarded with the FAD Special Prize 2007, the prize for the III Iberoamerican Bienal for Architecture and Engineering 2002 and the C.O.A.M. Prize 2005.

Mansilla + Tuñón were awarded the following commissions: Institucional Building for the City of the Environment in Soria (2008), Madrid Internacional Convention Center (2007), Helga de Alvear Foundation Art Center in Cáceres (2005), Lalín Town Hall (2004), Master Plan of the area of Valbuena in Logroño (2003), Library on Artists Street in Madrid (2003), Cantabria Museum (2002). Francisco Mangado, (Navarra, 1957), is an architect from the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra, where he has been a professor since 1982. He has been a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at the Yale University, visiting professor at the EPF Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Baird and Gensler guest professor at Cornell University and visiting professor at the Polytechnic of Milan.

From his works they emphasize the Palace of Congresses and Auditorium of Pamplona "Baluarte" (2003), the Field of Soccer of Palencia (2006), the Municipal Center of Exhibitions and Congresses of Ávila (2009), the Museum of Archeology of Vitoria (2009 ), the Spanish Pavilion for the Zaragoza International Exhibition (2008), the BBAA Museum of Asturias in Oviedo (2015) and the recently inaugurated Palau de Congresos de Palma de Mallorca (2016) and the New Venue Building of Norvento Enerxia in Lugo (2017). Currently he develops his activity in several countries.

Thanks to this professional work he has received, among others, the Andrea Palladio Architecture Award, the Architecture FAD, the CEOE prize, the Construmat Architecture Award, the Fernando García Mercadal Architecture Prize, the Asturian Architecture Prize, the "Giancarlo Ius Gold Medal" awarded by the International Union of Architects, the Copper in Architecture Award, the RIBA EU Award, the Spanish Architecture Award 2009 and the RIBA for International Excellence, among others.

In 2011 he was named "International Fellow" of the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and in 2013 honorary member of the AIA (American Institute of Architects). In November 2016, the Berlin Academy of Arts grants Francisco Mangado the Berlin Art Prize-Architecture Prize 2017 in recognition of his work.

In 2008 he founded the Architecture and Society Foundation, which works to favor the interaction of architecture with other disciplines of creation, thought and economy, which has received the CSCAE gold medal (Higher Council of Architects of Spain) 2015

In July 2015 he was appointed General Coordinator of Biennials and under his coordination was awarded to the Spanish Pavilion the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennial in May 2016.

Jose María Sánchez García was born in Don Benito (Badajoz) in 1975. He is an architect from the School of Architecture of Madrid (2002) and associate professor of the same school.

In 2003 she received a scholarship from the Velazquez House and in 2007-2008 the Academy of Spain in Rome.

At the international level he has received awards like 1st prize of Architectural Review Emerging Architecture in 2009 (exhibition at the RIBA, London), was honored as one of 10 emerging international studies by Architectural Record's Design Vanguard 2009 in New York, X Prize finalist Contractworld 2010 Hannover and was selected VII for Latin American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism among others.

At national level he has been selected for XI Spanish Architecture Biennale, winning 1st prize in Young Architecture, Special Mention Award in the FAD 2010 Architecture and won 1st prize Nan V Awards of Architecture and Construction 2011 among others.

He has participated in national and international conferences and lectures in Barcelona Open Biarch in Lusiada University of Porto, in Izmir (Turkey), in Schools Architecture of Malaga, Sevilla, Zaragoza, Madrid, Segovia and at the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome.

He has also served as CISMEF09 international exhibition in Guangzhou, China, New York and Paris with exposure JAE Young Architects of Spain in Santiago Chile, Quito, Puerto Rico, Bogotá, Oran and Peru with 100% exposure Madrid at the RIBA in London, Athens and Moscow with the exhibition "Una ciudad llamada España" and with that of "35 + Exposición de Arquitectura Española" in Athens and Cyprus.
