«In our work, we use multiple references. From Bedouin tents as an example of traditional nomad architecture to works of Russian constructivists, early works of Renzo Piano and many others.
The red side panels inside the pavilion fulfil an acoustic function, while the pneumatic lenses under the ceiling illuminate the auditorium and distribute the sound. The project brings together numerous architectural traditions, personalities, and movements, from the temporary structures of Bedouins and other nomadic peoples to the concept designs of Ivan Leonidov and Shigeru Ban.»

SNKH designed his temporary scheme as a white tensile structure, while the interior has red walls that surround the large screen. Garage Screen curator Evgeny Gusyatinskiy notes that the new pavilion «is not instantly recognizable as a cinema,» and he hopes that the current circumstances can make way for a ‘reinvention of the design and the very existence mode‘ of the movie-going experience.
«The competition offered a unique chance to design and build a structure like this, a rare opportunity even for the most successful and experienced architects. It was a huge leap for a small Yerevan-based studio to win such a high-profile competition. We are very happy with the result and we hope the public of Moscow comes to love it as well.»

Garage Screen concept, according to Varvara Melnikova, CEO of Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design and Strelka KB partner, was to offer young architects the unique opportunity to make their visions come true. Taking only 6 months from the selection of the winning project to its launch, the project, an elaborate construction that required a precise calculation of the structural load-carrying capacity of the outside framework, must achieve lightness and mobility.
Garage Screen, a pop-up cinema, brings audiences the best of Russian and international features, documentaries, experimental films, the latest festival releases, and animation. Of course, it is screening movies with social distancing measures in place.
This year’s Garage Screen summer program is divided into three sections. Silver Prints is a program of pictures produced in the analogue era and designed to be projected on film. Happy Hours features arthouse films that are longer than usual and work with the visualization of time. One Time Only is a series of unique and primarily single screenings of films that will not be shown in Russian cinemas outside of Garage Screen.
