Batlleiroig Arquitectura Studio designed the recovery and improvement of the historic Boca de la Mina promenade and the creation of the new Parque de los Aromas and the Agrarian Garden of “Camp de Reus”. It is located northwest of the city of Reus in Tarragona, specifically to the north of the railway line and the train station.

The approach of the study was to condition and dignify a space of great natural, patrimonial, and sentimental value and to favor all the uses that contribute to maintaining the identity of the place. The purpose of the proposal is to maintain the current character of the promenade as a recreational area for the community.

The project is one of the 50 finalists of the XVI BEAU Awards (Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism) in the Common Actions category.

Batlleiroig Arquitectura wanted to promote the inclusiveness of the Paseo. For this reason, the new section of the Paseo always incorporates a paved strip, the width of which is variable along the promenade. In any case, its width is always greater than 1.2 m.

The new section also tries to generate a good drainage system through vegetable ditches on both sides of the road. These new ditches lead the waters towards retention and filtration points or return them to the two existing ravines.

The main material of the path is slate, and traditional solid brick has been used as a complementary material, which configures the new integration in this environment. It has been used in different formats and arrangements depending on the situation and purpose.

Description of project by Batlleiroig Arquitectura

Recovery and improvement of the historic Boca de la Mina promenade and creation of the new Parque de los Aromas and the Agrarian Garden of “Camp de Reus”. The objective of the project is to condition and dignify a space of great natural, patrimonial, and sentimental value and to favor all uses that contribute to maintaining the identity of the place. This involves consolidating it as a recreational space for sports and healthy practice, for activities to learn about and discover the environment, and to promote its cultural and historical values.

The new section of the promenade is based on the need to create a good drainage system through vegetable ditches on both sides of the road. These new ditches lead the waters towards retention and filtration points or return them to the two existing ravines. Only in the last instance is the water directed to the public network, thus avoiding its overload and returning the water to the environment, helping to maintain the natural cycle.

One of the main criteria of the proposal is to maintain the original character of the promenade. In this way, the protagonist of the walk continues to be the set of existing trees, and the main material of the path is the salon. As a complementary material that configures the new integration in this environment, traditional solid brick has been used in different formats and arrangements depending on the situation and use of each point. Its use is not limited to the pavement; it serves to configure the rest of the elements of the promenade.

Batlleiroig is an architecture multidisciplinary office based in Barcelona, that combines the practice of Planning, Landscaping and Architecture. Founded in 1981 by Enric Batlle and Joan Roig, it is made up of over 140 technicians from various disciplines. Committed with the environment and involved in the search for solutions to solve our planet's climate emergency, Batlleiroig has been talking about Landscape and Nature since its foundation.

With a holistic view, which always seeks to link the definition of urban to the logic of landscape, a visionary commitment to innovation and a stable, diverse, and constantly formed team, Batlleiroig works in three different disciplines: City and Territory, Landscape and Public space, Architecture and Construction. Areas in which they intervene, trying to be highly specialized in each of them, but without forgetting the essential transversality that is required today to develop any project.

The versatility of their work and the implication that it demonstrates to ensure the well-being and health of people, in addition to recognition, has given them the credibility and rigor to be considered, on the international scene, one of the leading practices in solutions linked to the future development of cities.

Medal CSCAE from the Superior Council of the Associations of Architects of Spain in 2017 for their business performance and FAD 2012 Prize for Architecture and Criticism, they have also received numerous awards for their built work, among which are: The International Architecture Awards in 2020 and in 2014, Landscape of the Year WAF 2018, several Catalonia Construction Awards, IAKS-International Olympic Committee Award 2015, multiple WAF Awards and the European Prize for Urban Public Space 2004.
