The jury of the Ceramics of Architecture and Interior Design Awards - presided by the architect Gonçalo Byrne (Gold Medal of the Architecture Academy of France or Prize of Rome Piranesi) - made public the past 25 of November in Castellón the resolution of the fifteenth Edition of these Awards. The two main categories of the Ceramics Prizes are Architecture and Interior Design, with an endowment of € 17,000 each. There is also a competition for Final Projects for Architecture students, endowed with € 5,000.
A rehabilitation project for two houses in Oropesa (Toledo) by Paredes Pedrosa, the gastronomic space "TABA espazioa" by Ibon Salabeirra in San Sebatian's Tabakalera, and the Final Project "In Situ" by M Wesam Al Asali from Cambridge University have been the winners in the category of Architecture, Interior Design and Final Project respectively in the last ASCER Ceramic Awards.

The contests' results show less interest than on other occasions, either because of the low level of activity of ceramic construction, a crisis that does not finish recovering, or the loss of interest in this type of contests.

The jury was formed by the architects: Gonçalo Byrne (president), Elisa Valero, Iñaqui Carnicero, Nuno Brandão Costa, Ricardo Sánchez Lampreave, José M. Milá and Ramón Monfort. The jury of the Ceramics for Architecture and Interior Design Awards, chaired by the architect Gonçalo Byrne, celebrated on November 24 in Castellón the meeting to resolve the fifteenth edition of these Awards, already recognized in the architectural field.

In the category of Architecture, the project "Two Houses in Oropesa (Toledo)" by Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos wins. There, the use of ceramics is not simply a coating or a finish, but a material capable of giving a envelope and unique image to the project. The jury also wanted to award a mention in the category of Architecture to the "House MM, Palma de Mallorca" by Ohlab. This house has been designed according to Passivhaus' standards for maximum energy efficiency. For this, a tilted cover has been chosen, with a white ceramic tile of 15x15cm for three reasons: aesthetic; ease of cleaning the cover for reuse of rainwater; and maintenance.

In the Interior Design category, the first prize was for "TABA espazioa" by Ibon Salaberria, a space with cafeteria, pizzeria and wine cellar in Tabakalera, the new International Center of Contemporary Culture of Donostia - San Sebastián. The floor and the bars are covered with ceramic 10x10 cm like carpets that are placed on the elements of separation between worker and client. The jury decided to give a mention to the "House # 77" by Raúl Montero Martínez and Emilio Pardo Rivacoba, an apartment reform's project of barely 51 m2 located in the loft of a housing building in the Old Area of Pamplona.

Category Final Project (PFC)
Finally, the Ceramics Awards have a category aimed at distinguishing the best Final Project carried out by students of Architecture Schools in which the use of ceramics in the project plays an important role.

The jury has agreed to award the first prize in the PFC category to the "In-Situ: Tools and Technology in Traditional Architecture" project by M Wesam Al Asali of Cambridge University.
Considering the nature of the award, the jury unanimously highlights the project strategy, which - with a single ceramic material - solves a constructive system consistent with function and place. Addressing a current problem effectively, generating added landscape value.

The jury has decided to award a Mention to the project "Como agua de mayo" by Belén Collado González, from the San Pablo CEU University in Madrid. The jury highlights the plasticity and the sensitivity in the use of the material.
