The 1950s were not easy for Malaga and in 1957, faced with the difficult economic situation that the country was going through, the State decided to create Industrias Textiles del Guadalhorce (INTELHORCE). An important piece in the incipient process of decentralization of the country.
In 1963 the last construction of the urbanization was carried out, a warehouse for finishing by the company Agromán, which was designed by the architect Ramón Vázquez Molezún in collaboration with the road engineer Manuel María Valdés. It is the only space that has been saved from the total demolition of the factory complex. It is a diaphanous space raised with concrete pillars with a "Y" shape on which prefabricated reinforced concrete trusses rest to form a covering with a toothed shape that allows the opening of large skylights.

Abandoned for a long time and about to be demolished, it is being rehabilitated to be the new distribution center for the children's fashion company Mayoral. The System Arquitectura studio, directed by Rafael Urquiza Sánchez, was commissioned to renovate and execute the recovery works of the ship, which are already in their final phase. The good recovery work is being photographed by Fernando Alda.

The project integrally recovers the interior, highlighting the value of the structure, its spatial volume, and the overhead lighting projected from the roof. For the exterior, a completely new facade has been designed to reduce solar radiation, for which five types of panels with geometric folds made of glass fiber-reinforced concrete were projected.

The result is a dynamic facade that recalls the folds of fabrics in an idea, similar to the one proposed by the Japanese studio SANAA for the Vitra Campus production factory. The opening of the center is scheduled for mid-2019.

Description of project by System Arquitectura

The project is understood as two differentiated parts, interconnected and organized around a common central axis. Therefore, we treat both areas with a different aesthetic, even if we connect them on time. On the one hand, an urbanized area that we must design for use at the beginning of 2019. On the other hand, a zone of soft expansion, which we have to prepare for future growth but which will be treated as a landscape performance.

As for the organization of the site and its uses, the old gardens and the access control situation will be recovered. The rest of the areas and uses have been considered taking into account their final situation within the site once it has been built in its entirety, to optimize the investment.

For this, a series of actions are carried out:

  • 1. The recovery of the main office building in phases.
  • 2. Strategic location of the parking lot in the center of the plot.
  • 3. Location of the waiting area of the trucks
  • 4. Creation of a multipurpose space.
  • 5. Treat the expansion zone as a "soft" landscape element.
  • 6. Creation of a green mattress that filters the outside air of the plot and that visually separates the interior from the exterior roads of the plot.
