Sometimes, what remains of an former building is very little, and yet that is enough, so that its recovery becomes essential, at the time of establishing an intelligent patrimonial recovery pattern.

This is the case of the renovation of an old 19th century house, in the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, restored by the Beautell Arquitectos studio, commissioned by the City Council.

The restored building will be the headquarters of the “Diablos Locos” murga, which is a musical group of the Tenerife Carnival.
After carrying out a preliminary analysis, by which the integral recovery of the property was prescribed, Beautell Arquitectos began the project considering the environmental values of the building, consisting of its volume, façade and materiality, designing a property with a house typology with backyard, which allows it to develop its new program.

The solution restored the façade and its characteristic elements, recovering the blinds of the guillotine windows based on glass and carpentry with wooden frames, disappeared. Similar materials were used in the rest of the building: lime and projected mortars, wood in the carpentry, polished and washed concrete that recall the old floated cement pavements.

Project description by Beautell Arquitectos

The building, located in the founding nucleus of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, was originally used as a single-family home and responds to the typology of traditional Canarian architecture buildings from the mid-19th century. Its simple façade, compositionally adheres to neoclassical aesthetics.

The building has undergone a series of profound reforms and interventions that have completely distorted it. The actions carried out managed to eliminate the majority of the masonry load-bearing walls, having been replaced by metal profile frames. A new reinforced concrete slab was also built that serves as a roof for the semi-basement. On the contrary, the façade kept its architectural values almost intact.

After the preliminary analysis carried out, and given the precarious state of the heritage building, the integral rehabilitation of the property was prescribed to maintain its current use as the headquarters of the “Diablos Locos” murga, which is a musical group of the Carnival of Tenerife.

Considering the environmental values of the building, made up of its volume, façade and materiality, and from the reinterpretation of our traditional architectures, it is intended to provide the property with a scheme of a house with a backyard, which allows the development of a diaphanous and flexible space compatible with the use to which the construction is intended.

The proposed solution involves restoring the façade and its characteristic elements, recovering the sash window enclosures made of glass and carpentry with wooden palillería, which have now disappeared.

Materiality. Materials similar to those present in the constructions of the time will be used, lime and projected mortars, wood in the carpentry, polished and washed concrete that recall the old floated cement pavements.
