A CURTAIN RISES OVER THE CITY

The new Theater of Cachan aims to transform the neighborhood with an urban, cultural and social point of view. The entrance of the Theatre, as an outstretched hand that prompts and guides visitors, is marked by a fold that pace the length of the façade.

The building appears as a simple volume, made up of two overlapping entities. A first transparent volume disconnects the project from the ground: it is the foyer, open and lively, offering a set of openings and revealing the inner volume. A second mineral volume composed of terracotta elements, stands over the first volume and envelopes the project as a stage curtain.

A FUNCTIONAL AND TECHNICAL ORGANIZATION

The new project is organized around the existing and central auditorium. On the ground floor, a generous reception area structures the whole distribution with the two auditoriums, the cafeteria and the exhibition space.

The new 250 seats auditorium fits behind the existing one in order to share the new technical spaces and facilitate the flow of actors, technicians and logistic staff.

The overall image of the project is conceived as a technological and functional tool that confirms the dynamism of the city of Cachan, for the sake of architectural and landscape quality.

Ateliers O-S architectes. Founded in 2007 in Rotterdam by Vincent Baur, Guillaume Colboc, and Gaël Le Nouëne, after meeting while working with architects such as Rem Koolhaas and Adriaan Geuze (OMA, West8).

The three partners of Ateliers O-S architectes have complementary personalities, which often leads them to combine interests and collaborate in other fields such as visual art or landscape architecture.

Committed to controlling the entire production chain—from image to drawing, from plan to manufacturing—and with a conscious and responsible neo-artisanal approach to the project, the studio develops proposals of public interest ranging from social housing to cultural facilities.

They regularly participate in international competitions, where their projects are regularly recognized, such as the Administrative City of Mérida, the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw, and the National Library in Prague.

Precision of scale, social and spatial interaction, courtesy, and attention to detail characterize their work. Advocates of an evolutionary and flexible architecture, the architects explore and reveal the potential uses and activities unique to each location. This approach results in buildings that house unexpected treasures and great spatial potential, while simultaneously integrating into a discreet, almost alchemical development.
