The renovation and expansion project for the GO! talent school designed by B-architecten, consists of a post-secondary school in Dendermonde, offering vocational training within the healthcare, commercial and industrial sectors.

With its almost 6,000 square meters of surface area on the edge of the old town, the school can accommodate over 600 young people and is located in the historic fortification line of nearby Brussels.
The scheme proposed by B-architecten for the school’s redevelopment is based on a community campus approach and addresses not only the school’s current needs but also the spatial organization of the educational landscape.

To the west of the site, a new building was built: a three-story structure with administrative school departments and sports facilities, intricately stacked into a single, compact volume. The buildings across the site are linked by a continuum of public and semi-public spaces.

Description of project by B-architecten

GO! talent, formerly known as Royal Technical Atheneum in Dendermonde (KTAD) is a post-secondary education institute which provides vocational training in the care, commercial and industrial sectors.

GO! talent is a 5,954 sqm school for more than 600 youngsters, located in the historical context of Brussels Fortification Line, at the edge of Dendermonde’s historical center. The scheme is an interpretation of the community campus approach, tackling not only the current needs of the school but also addressing the spatial organization of the local educational landscape.

The urban and architectural analysis of the site has shown the cultural importance of the existing 1920’s Aria Building. Its magnificent architecture and timeless layout suggest the spatial organization of the campus as well as determine the character of the Begijnhoflaan, concealing the transition between the city and the campus. Hence the decision to preserve this building and transform it into educational facilities for care and commercial departments.

The new school building at the west end of the site is a three story structure with predominantly industrial school departments and sports facilities, intricately stacked together in a single, compact building volume. The general circulation zones, conceived as semi-outdoor spaces, wrap the building on each level and act as a mediator between inner and outer environments, tempering climatic conditions and noise levels inside and out.

All three buildings are related to each other through a continuum of public and semi-public spaces. The three main squares (Aria Square, School Square and Work Square) simultaneously connect and isolate the buildings, evoking a common place to play and socialize.

B-architecten, B-bis, B-city, B-juxta. Back in 1997, Evert Crols, Dirk Engelen and Sven Grooten set up an independent office for architecture: B-architecten was born. The three had met during their education in Antwerp and Amsterdam. At the internationally oriented Berlage Institute, it became clear that Evert, Dirk and Sven shared a common design interest. Today, the office is located in Antwerp and Brussels.

Ten years after the foundation of B-architecten, they started a new initiative together with Sebastiaan Leroy: B-bis architecten became an office that focuses on small architectural projects, residential interior design, offices and shops, scenographies for exhibitions and performing arts, temporary installations and furniture design.

In 2020, B-city was launched as a third B-platform with the aim to shape and supervise complex urban projects. The core of its ambition is to work on large-scale projects that carry the potential of becoming new city districts.

Today, B is the sum of four studio divisions called B-architecten, B-bis, B-city and B-juxta have naturally grown into an office of more than 60 people. Each B-team has its particular focus and way of functioning, yet they all share a distinct innovative view on the variety of projects the B-platforms stand for.
