Description of project by J. Mayer H.
“White Houses” are 16 stations by 16 architects along the river Rems, curated by Jórunn Ragnarsdóttir. As part of Remstal Gartenschau 2019 and inaugurated in early May, J.MAYER.H designed a walk-through building sculpture for the city of Waiblingen.
The diagrammatic concept of the sculpture explores a contemporary interpretation of a classic house form with a saddle roof that dissolves. Placed on the northern tip of the Schwaneninsel and in dialogue with the surrounding historic buildings and the lush nature along the river, the house transforms from a solid wall into a fluid space.
At the beginning of the transformation, the building is reduced to a single section. Then the “wall of the house” disintegrates from the inside out into individual puzzle pieces that fuse into larger seating elements. The generous opening of the White House frames the surroundings and creates a space for contemplation.
The J. Mayer H. firm designed one of the 16 stations that form part of Remstal Gartenschau 2019, in Germany. A sculpture that explores a contemporary interpretation of a classic gable roof house.
J. Mayer H. seeks with the sculpture to generate a dialogue with the surrounding houses and nature. The "section" disintegrates outwards into a kind of puzzle piece in which the visitor can sit and contemplate the river and its surroundings.
