The project by Bellafilarquitectes called Casa S2 is a single-family summer building for a couple with two children. The house is located in the municipality of La Escala, a Spanish town in the province of Girona.

The residence is designed under the requirements of local regulations, where respect for the integrity of the pre-existing trees that are part of an extensive pine forest is of vital importance. The special attention paid to respecting this Mediterranean landscape generates an interesting result.
The S2 house by Bellafilarquitectes is designed on one floor with the firm intention of protecting the privacy of the occupants, both inside and outside the house and its surroundings. An archaic and at the same time close image generate the idea of a protective environment and promising freshness during the summer.

One of the strongest design features is the structure, which is formed by textured reinforced concrete walls, which support a roof formed by semicircular vaults cantilevered over the south facade. The roofs are covered with deep green ceramic, which reflects the surroundings and contrasts with the neutrality of the exposed concrete walls.

Description of project by Bellafilarquitectes

The House S2 has been designed as a summer residence for a couple with two children. It is a detached construction limited to one floor in compliance with the local urban planning regulations. Another starting condition is to respect the integrity of the pre-existing trees that are part of an extensive pine forest that already existed before the urbanization of the area. It is located in the "Els Emperadors" sector in the municipality of l'Escala, province of Girona.

The plot is located a few meters from the beach so the access road to the house is very busy in summer. Therefore, one of the premises of the project is to protect the privacy of the occupants, both when they are inside and outside the house.

The structure of the house is defined by a system of 2.10 m high concrete walls that distribute the housing program and supports a roof of semicircular vaults cantilevered over the south façade. The upper finish is made of green vitrified tiles manufactured in La Bisbal (Girona). The concrete walls were cast-in-place using wooden boards as formwork, which gives them a coarse, matte texture in contrast to the satin surface of the tiles. In the use of color and texture we seek to evoke the contrast between the trunks and the tops of the pine trees with the purpose of integrating the building in harmony with the landscape

The walls extend beyond the interior spaces generating two semicircular courtyards, one contained within the other, shaping two spaces of different scales that protect from the view of the street both the daytime use area and the bedrooms.

The functional program consists of a living-dining room and three bedrooms facing south and a kitchen and two bathrooms that, like the entrance hall and the entrance, face north. The building is completed with an additional space used as a storage-laundry room. The total constructed area is 204 m².

Bellafilarquitectes is a studio formed by architects Marta Andreu Castellví (1975), and Albert Massagué Obradors (1971).

The studio develops and executes projects in constant dialogue with the client. They analyze the requirements imposed by the regulations and we try to ensure that the project is not limited by them, seeking solutions that do not undermine the ambition of the project and always trying to optimize the resources available.

From the certainty that architecture does not find beauty if it does not satisfy the function for which it was conceived, the studio is evolving its work towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly construction without ceasing to have a will of plastic and formal creation that, without being alien to the character of the place, they believe must give expression to their works.
