Opera, the new public art permanent installation by Edoardo Tresoldi on Reggio Calabria’s seafront, promoted and commissioned by the local Municipality and the Metropolitan City, will be inaugurated on September 12th and 13th. During the opening weekend a series of free music, performance and poetry events will be held.
Opera is Tresoldi’s second installation in Calabria after Il Collezionista di Venti in 2013 and the second major permanent public artwork in Italy after the Basilica of Siponto in Apulia, commissioned by the Italian Ministry of Culture in 2016.

The installation generates a mental agora that leads visitors into an ever-changing perceptive dimension thanks to its playing with heights and depths.

Opera was created to celebrate the contemplative relationship between place and the human being through the language of classical architecture and the transparency of the Absent Matter, a relationship expressed through wire mesh.

The open structure - consisting of a colonnade of 46 pillars peaking at 8 meters at their highest point within a 2,500 square meter park - will offer a new monument fully crossable and accessible to locals and visitors. The installation will be part of one of the largest European public spaces and aims to become a new landmark in the region.

The sound installation by Italian musician and composer Teho Teardo will narrate the fusion between Opera and the site through a sound design articulated through the different moments of the day: morning, sunset and night. In addition, poetry events curated by Italian poet and writer Franco Arminio; a performance by Daniel Cundari with Jo Di Nardo and Francesco Speciale; Lara Chiellino’s poetry; live music by Guido Maria Grillo with Francesco Loccisano and Fabio Macagnino, and 'Livio e Manfredi'.

Edoardo Tresoldi (Cambiago, 1987) is focused on research and creative artistic sculpture. At the age of 9 years he takes the first lessons of drawing hand of the painter Mario Straforini, after studying design and visual arts at the Art Institute of Monza in Milan.

In 2009 he moved to Rome and began working as a scene painter for several film projects. The design becomes a laboratory for analysis. Since 2013 he makes sculptures and works of metal mesh.

Edoardo Tresoldi plays with both the transparency of mesh materials, as well as industrial materials, to transcend time/space and narrate a dialogue between art and its surroundings. His art is a visual synthesis that lies upon dissolving physical limitations. His works are featured worldwide in public spaces, archaeological sites, and contemporary festivals.

In 2016, he carried out the restoration of the Basilica di Siponto, a unique convergence between contemporary art and archaeology, and was awarded the Gold Medal for Italian Architecture 2018 - Special Prize to Commission. In 2017, he was honored by Forbes as one of the 30 most influential European artists under 30. In 2018, he created “Etherea” for the Coachella Festival, one of the world’s most anticipated and important music events.
