The renovation of the house by Xavier Ramoneda, Pau Millet is located in a building in the small town of La Garriga, a town 252 meters above sea level, with a slightly mountainous relief, located north of the city of Barcelona. The house was built in 1884 and occupies a narrow plot of land, 5x30 meters, located in the old town.

The most interesting aspect of the project is its ability to reform the house in dialogue with the memory of the building. The strategy was based on maintaining the original structure and the stairs to maintain the typology of the house.
In the proposal designed by Xavier Ramoneda, and Pau Millet,  the spatial organization is carried out from a new central core of open stairs that allows the creation of visual relationships, with its lateral spaces in which the partitions have been eliminated, facilitating fluid spaces, better brighter and more open.

The rest of the interventions have been only to functionally reactivate the housing facilities. In the reform, nearby and traditional materials have been used, such as bricks, ceramic tiles, stone... used with traditional techniques that reduce the carbon footprint.

Description of project by Xavier Ramoneda, Pau Millet

The two-story house is located in the town of La Garriga, near Barcelona, and it was built in 1884. The House occupies a narrow plot of 5x30 meters next to the old town.

The project had the challenge of refurbishing the house while keeping its memory. The main decision was to keep the original structure and the central staircase in order to preserve the character of this kind of house typology. Only new elements were added when it was necessary for terms of comfort and functionality.

Inner divisions were removed to expand the interior spaces of the house, gain bigger rooms, and bring more light to the core of the house. The new distribution is organized around the central staircase, which opens at some points to create visual relationships between the different spaces, and provides them with more light.

The use of traditional materials like bricks, ceramic tiles, wood, or natural stone creates a link between the old house and the new intervention.
