The four buildings rehabilitation for the Headquarters of Property Registration in Vigo, designed by the architects Jesus Irisarri Castro and Guadalupe Piñera Manso, has been awarded at the BEAU in the Heritage and transformation category.

In 2008, the Irisarri+Piñera architects were the winners for the new Headquarters of Property Registration of the city of Vigo, Galicia. The project comprises four old buildings at different levels, and aims to generate a programmatic unity without sacrificing the individual presence of each of them. This is achieved thanks to the unification of their respective yards by a single slope, and the opening thereof to the surrounding streets at different heights.

El proyecto busca el equilibrio entre una organización conjunta, y no renunciar a la presencia de los edificios agrupados, entre conseguir una percepción de pieza unitaria, y lo heredado. Entrelazando tres tipos de intervenciones; rehabilitación, reestructuración para nuevos usos, y la sustitución parcial, seleccionando los elementos de valor y las trazas del lugar.
Un patio suma de los existentes organiza y aporta cualidad y calidad, así como referencia en sección. Esto permite resolver con un solo desnivel las distintas cotas de los edificios, manteniendo los muros, así como sus funcionales huecos, Una distribución espacial “genérica” flexible, volcada de modo “cruzado”, a la calle y al patio, donde solo se cierran archivos y servicios.
El patio conecta el edificio con las calles circundantes en sus diversos niveles. El acceso principal, es donde se encuentran la nueva y la vieja arquitectura. Es el lugar donde aparece la escala pública en forma de un espacio de doble altura que da presencia al patio común desde la calle, recuperando para ello la idea de un atrio de acceso, espacio intermedio entre la ciudad y el edificio.
Nos apoyamos sobre los muros, saneados y reforzados. Conservando la tipología estructural y escala, la estructura horizontal de hormigón asume las fuertes sobrecargas del programa. Cada elemento funciona para aquello que fue diseñado, sin estructuras superpuestas.
Los huecos con ventanas tradicionales a exterior, en contraste con vidrios de carpintería oculta marcan el espesor del muro, evidenciando tanto el paso del tiempo como un cambio de uso. Las fachadas conservadas, se trasdosan en los huecos, para maximizar la luz. En el patio, la galería con protección de lamas de madera móvil, optimiza el espacio y la iluminación-ventilación.
La cubierta unitaria se apoya en los muros medianeros, y queda vista conformando un rico espacio de sección variable.

Jesus Irisarri, Guadalupe Piñera. Irisarri + Piñera
Irisarri + Piñera. Architecture practice was established in 1989, by Jesus Irisarri Castro and Guadalupe Piñera Manso. They are professors in the Department of Architectural Design at the School of Architecture of Corunna. Jesus Irisarri has been visiting professor at the E.T.S. Architecture of Navarra and Seville, as well as the "International Laboratory of Architecture and Urban Design" in Venice (2000).
Since 2001 they have been co-directors of the magazine "Obradoiro" Official College of Architects of Galicia. They have been invited to give courses and lectures at various universities and national and international organizations.
