Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos have won First Prize in the International Architectural Competition for the new Guangzhou Science Museum (China). It was organized by the Municiality of Guangzhou.

The project of Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos (Madrid-Berlin) has been chosen by the jury of the international competition for the new design of the Science Museum in Guangzhou. The museum will be located in the south bank of the Pearl River, next to the Canton Tower, in close relationship with the Lingnan Park.

Nieto Sobejano's project is based on a group of nine volumes that create a flexible sequence of large "ceramic vases". The functional program has a total area of 80,000 sqm and includes various rooms of permanent and temporary exhibitions, theaters, auditoriums and it has an indoor garden with views of the city and the Lignan Park. The project, with the emergence of a group of elements, supports many changes in order to create more complex spaces from a simple combinatorial system. The new Science Museum will be part of a cultural space located in the new urban axis -along the Guangzhou Museum and Art Gallery. It has an ambitious program for the popularization of science and an unusual spatial concept, which directly connects the memory and the historical tradition of this part of the bank of the Pearl River with a modern approach of technology and museology.

In the adjacent plot, also by competition to project the Guangzhou Museum, bmp Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners were awarded the the First Prize. Both projects will form part of “Three Museums - One Square”, a new cultural hub form by this two museums and the new Art Gallery by Thomas Herzog Architekten.
