Architecture studio based in Alicante, eneseis, was commissioned to design the Felip Miralles House of Culture, in the small municipality of Benimantell located in the interior of the province of Alicante, in the Marina Baja region and in the sub-region of the Guadalest Valley, of the Valencian Community, Spain.

The architects set themselves the goal of making the new building, in addition to housing and making visible the cultural activity of the municipality in a rural context, become a reference space for visitors and inhabitants of Benimantell.
The new house of culture designed by eneseis is conceived as the formal simplification of a townhouse, with a contemporary image, where the exterior and interior are connected through their visual permeability and through the material continuity of the pavement.

The two-storey building is located in an area with a large difference in height between its front access from the street road and rear access towards the square. From the street, the building is accessed through the upper floor presenting a completely opaque image, on the opposite side a completely glazed wall opens onto the "La Serrella" mountain range. On the ground floor, all the classrooms are directly connected to the square and take ownership of it.

Project description by eneseis

The Felip Miralles Cultural Centre is located in the municipality of Benimantell, on the road through the town.

By participating in this project, we aim to create a place to host and inspire local cultural activities, activities that will reach people across the region, given the building’s status as a university teaching venue.

In essence, the building is a simplified townhouse, able to blend into the urban landscape, but with key features that will identify it as an iconic public space.

It has two floors that align with the existing levels. On the upper floor, the road-side of the building is completely closed off and on the opposite side, a large window looks out across the rooftops towards the impressive La Serrella mountain range. On the ground floor, the classrooms have direct access to the square and spill out onto it.

Outside and inside become one as the cobblestones of the street cross the threshold into the building, flowing through the ground floor to reach the public square beyond. It is, nonetheless, an urban construction, but one with a mission to bring this public space to life.

The dry construction system is quick to assemble, uses fewer materials and has few layers, making construction simpler and more economical, and therefore more environmentally and financially sustainable.

The structure creates the spaces, while OSB boards are used to furnish and finish the rooms.
The Felip Miralles Cultural Centre is a forum for dialogue between visitors to and residents of Benimantell. It stands out as a public cultural venue in a rural context, a space that, ultimately, will become the great hall of the town.

Eneseis is an Architecture and Urbanism studio located in Alicante, Spain. It began its activity in 1998 with the first orders and awards in competitions. In a short time they were already carrying out all kinds of residential, public works, commercial, civil works or planning projects that, gradually, became more complex and important.

They have a team made up of the architects Daniel Solbes Ponsoda and José Luis Durán Arribas and the engineer Vicente Perez Pla.

Daniel Solbes Ponsoda is an architect from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Valencia in 1998, with an exchange course with Ecole d'Architecture de Paris La Villete in 1994 and a course at School of Architecture Surveying and Building 1996.

José Luis Durán Arribas is architect from the University of Alicante in 2007 passing through Universität Berlin in 2000, while Vicente Perez Pla is a Technical Engineer of Public Works from the University of Alicante in 1992 and Civil Engineer from the University of Alicante in 2011.

They are defined by constant work and learning, with a discourse that arises from the explanation of an extensive and diverse work carried out with dedication and involvement. In their projects they analyze the environment, understood in a broad sense, and identify the opportunities that add value and the way in which the projects are able to incorporate them into their architectural proposals, eventually being those proposals recognized through awards or publications.
