Description of project by Anna Codina
Located at the intersection of Naples Street and Gran Vía, this project resolves with usefulness a corner of Barcelona's Eixample, converting an empty space (in which in the future it is planned to build an equipment) in an area designed for a temporary use: a space intended for the stay and recreation of dogs. Its condition of provisionality inspired the choice of materials, which are typical of a construction process, and fit perfectly into this project due to its low cost and its slight maintenance.
The closure of this recreation area has been carried out with a kind of "plant cages", which allow the coexistence between animals and plants but with some protection; that is, without these suffer the usual abuse caused by the passage of animals. It has also installed a large planter that gives continuity to the party wall.
In this same space have also been located some prefabricated pieces of concrete, which are used in infrastructures, which become game elements here so that dogs can make different tours during their leisure time in the aforementioned area. The smaller pieces or blocks can also be used as banks by the owners or caretakers of the pets.
An empty urban space, waiting for its anthropization, whether natural or artificial, is always a space of uncertainty for citizens. A programmed but not finished space, in the middle of the city, is always seen by citizens as a "terrain vague".
The architect Anna Codina was commissioned to give provisional use to this urban space. A space for games and recreation for the dogs of the neighbors, which in a dense city like Barcelona becomes a luxury. The project, responding to its temporality, combines building materials with gardening, in an intelligent way, ensuring that its maintenance is minimal.
