22 of the overall 82 films of the Monditalia exhibition will be screen full-length for the public of Biennale Architettura 2014 at stage F of the Corderie, which from August 15th to November 21st will be transformed in a cinema hall with 4 screens, one for each side of the stage. Among the films in programme, masterpieces and less-known Italian and international movies: Stromboli by Rossellini, Il Vangelo secondo Matteo by Pasolini, Profondo rosso by Dario Argento, Lo zio di Brooklyn by D. Ciprì and F. Maresco, Milano calibro 9 by Fernando Di Leo.

“Never before has the entire Biennale been in the Biennale like this year”, stated President Paolo Baratta at the presentation of the 14th International Architecture Exhibition directed by Rem Koolhaas (Venice, Giardini and Arsenale, June 7 – November 23, 2014). The Exhibition section entitled Monditalia at the Corderie dell’Arsenale, in fact involves all the sectors of la Biennale: Dance, Music, Theatre and Cinema. These “activities”, explains Baratta, have not simply been added or juxtaposed alongside the Architecture Exhibition, but are an integral part of the Architecture Exhibition. In Monditalia – continues Baratta –  some aspects of the situation in Italy are collected and shown through research projects conducted ad hoc. The complexity of this reality, which is paradigmatic of what happens elsewhere in the world, must not be denied or concealed, but must be deliberately experienced as sources of regeneration and hence also as points of reference for architecture”.

“Cinema takes its rightful place in the Monditalia project of Biennale Architettura 2014 as a sort of common denominator – stated Alberto Barbera, Director of the Cinema Section of la Biennale. With the program of 82 films (or, in reality, fragments of films) arranged along the itinerary of the exhibition, they offer the visitor a mosaic of suggestions from which he can stitch together one of the possible interpretations of this appealing offering”.

Starting from these intentions, the fragments of these 82 films are projected on as many screens along the Corderie of the Arsenale. 2 films have been selected for each of the 41 research project developed by architects, photographers, academics and scholars for the exhibition Monditalia.
