BUILDING BOOKS, by IRMA BOOM

 Irma Boom (born 1960 Lochem, The Netherlands) is one of the most widely renowned graphic designers of today. Her often ingenious solutions to individual book productions have gained her international fame and her work is now collected by many leading museums such as the MoMA in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Museum für Gestaltung in Zürich. Irma Boom studied at the AKI School of Fine Arts in Enscheden and, after graduation, worked for five years as a designer in the Dutch government publishing office. In 1991 she started her own design studio in Amsterdam and subsequently she received the commission to document the corporate history for the Dutch multinational SHV.

This prestigious project, which took five years to complete, grew into a book of more than two thousand pages and marked a turning point in her career. In the ensuing years she has worked for governments, cultural organizations, publishers, artists, and commercial industries such as Vitra, Zumtobel, and Ferrari. Irma Boom has taught at Yale University (New Haven, Connecticut) and the Jan van Eyck Academy (Maastricht). In 2001 she received the prestigious Gutenberg Prize in Leipzig.
