Jiménez&Linares has designed next to the Quinta de Fuente del Berro Park, Madrid, Spain, a house dating from the 1920s, which has undergone a renovation due to its deterioration over the years.

The renovation is based on an investigation by the Sevillian studio, on the plans of the Archivo de Villa de Madrid, where they rescued the original plans and decided to rescue part of its past.
The Fuente del Berro house, designed by Jiménez&Linares, consists of a large white volume in which are framed large windows facing outside, inside stands a central staircase, which has been covered by a large surface that lets in sunlight through the decorations of palm leaves that have been drilled on this, and it is this staircase is responsible for creating a space in which the outdoor garden is "introduced" inside the house.

Constructively, in the work of restoration and habitability of the house have been added current materials that recall its origin, as is the case of the ceramic tiles of the roof, the white color of the facades, the fixed planters at the entrance and the large windows, and this idea is transferred to the interior with decorations that are not ostentatious, simple and elegant.

Description of project by Jiménez&Linares

HOUSE IN FUENTE DEL BERRO. MADRID
Next to the Quinta de Fuente del Berro Park, in a street bordered by Castaños de Indias, we find this house built at the end of the 1920s.

The house, which was the residence of the sculptor Jorge de Oteiza in the 1950s, was very deteriorated, and its facades had undergone numerous modifications.

We began by carrying out research in the Archivo de la Villa de Madrid, which allowed us to discover the plans of the original project. Based on this documentation, we decided to recover the original image of the house: a white volume, with large windows to the outside and a Roman ceramic roof, surrounded by a garden that seems to climb up the facade, through the incorporation of wrought steel planters.

Inside the house we find a central staircase that tries to incorporate the garden into the interior. This space is wrapped in a perforated mesh in the shape of palm trees that acts as a large screen that casts different shadows depending on the light. The result is something like walking along a large vine that connects the different spaces of the house by means of double heights.

Jimenez&Linares is a young studio that looks to the past to build the future. Winners on three occasions of the First Prize in the R.H.Driehaus International Competition, a recognition that distinguishes those architects who look towards the recovery of historical forms and the know-how of traditional architecture.

The studio is founded in 2018 by Elena Jiménez and Abelardo Linares based in Seville. Both are architects by ETSAS, Master in Projects by the Polytechnic University of Madrid and Master in Project Management by the European University; and have previously worked in Madrid for the studios of Alberto Campo Baeza and Rafael de la Hoz.

Since its origins, Jiménez&Linares has focused on developing its own identity through a series of works of varying scale and use, which share a clear thread: the recovery of classical forms from abstraction. Research into the elements of traditional architecture, their analysis, and translation to contemporary contexts is a fundamental part of the creative process that the studio undertakes for each new project. An architecture that wants to appear simple, but is based on precision, order, and ecology of resources.
