The awards organized by the Higher Council of Colleges of Architects of Spain (CSCAE) have just been awarded, in their second edition. At the gala, the Gold Medal for Architecture was awarded to the architect Josep Llinàs and the Alejandro de la Sota Foundation received the Lluís Comerón Graupera Architect Award

Among the notable awards, the Spanish Architecture award went to the 40 rental homes in Sant Feliu de Llobregat (Barcelona), by MAIO Architects; the Spanish Urban Planning Award, for the Master Plan of Els Rajolars d'Oliva (Valencia), by Terrario Arquitectura; and, the Permanence Award, for the University Campus of Vigo (Pontevedra), by Benedetta Tagliabue – EMBT Architects.

In total, 9 awards have been awarded: three special distinctions and six value awards, of the 27 finalist proposals among the 185 selected in the first phase out of a total of 497 presented.

Josep Llinás is a Valencian architect born in Castellón. He later taught there, as well as at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura del Vallés and the Ramon Llull University.

He has published studies on Josep Maria Jujol and José Antonio Coderch, and has collaborated on several projects with the architect Alejandro de la Sota, such as the construction of a building at the Spanish embassy in Paris.

He has won the FAD Interior Design Award (1976), the City of Barcelona Award (1995) for his apartment building on Carmen Street in Barcelona, and the FAD Architecture Award (1996) for the restoration of the Metropol Theatre in Tarragona. His works include a residential building in Berga (1977), CAP in Ripollet (1985), Municipal Library in Vila-seca (1986), Library and departments of the Escola de Enginyers de Camins de Barcelona (1989), Director's Building of the Facultat de Informàtica de Barcelona (1995), Vila-seca Town Hall (1996), the classroom building and bar of the Faculty of Law of the University of Barcelona (1996), the Central Library of Terrassa (1997), the Torre del Far in Torredembarra (2000) and the Pit-roig Centre in Barcelona (2001).

Enric Miralles Moya (Barcelona 1955 - Sant Feliu de Codines 2000) studied at the Barcelona School of Architecture, ETSAB, graduating in 1978. From 1973 to 1983 he collaborated with Albert Viaplana and Helio Piñón, and in 1984 he founded the Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós studio, from this stage one of his most poetic works stands out, such as the Igualada Cemetery. In 1993 he began the EMBT study with his wife and partner Benedetta Tagliabue.

Considered an architect of great inventiveness, he defined himself as the enfant terrible of Spanish architecture. He was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Columbia University for the 1980-81 academic year. Two years later, he presented his doctoral thesis "Things seen to the left and the right, (without glasses)."

Since 1985 he was professor at ETSAB (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona), holding the Chair of Architecture since 1996. In 1990 he began as Director and Professor of the Master Class at Städelschule of Frankfurt and beginning in 1992 served as the "Kenzo Tange Chair” professor at the GSD of Harvard University. Moreover, he was visiting professor and lecturer at several universities in the United States (Columbia, Princeton, Harvard, Yale), Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, and a member of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

As an architect of many works, his projects include, the Igualada Cemetery in Spain (1995) and the rehabilitation of Utrecht City Hall in Holland (2000). He was also active as an interior designer, with projects including The Hipostila shelving system(1989) in collaboration with Lluis Clotet and Oscar Tusquets Blanca for Bd Ediciones de Diseño, Lungomare Bench for Escofet,(2000), Vacante bench for Sellex (1991), and many other furnishing designs which were not put in production.

He has received numerous awards, including the National Prize of Spanish Architecture 1995, FAD Prize (Fomento Artes Decorativas) 1985 and 2000, The European ITALSTAD (Italy) 1991. Leone d’Oro Prize at the Biennale di Venezia 1996. His work has been published internationally in the most distinguished reviews, El Croquis N.100 101, Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue 1996-2000. Miralles Tagliabue EMBT is an international acknowledged architecture studio formed by Enric Miralles (1955-2000) and Benedetta Tagliabue in 1994.

The studio has experience in public spaces and buildings in both Europe and China working for State and Local Governments as well as Corporate and private clients.

EMBT’s mature approach to architecture, interior design, facility planning includes experience with educational, commercial, industrial and residential buildings, restoration of buildings as well as special purpose landscape architecture.

Each project evolves from the specific client requirements and innovation emerges through the design process. This approach is combined with strong technical and management skills to provide cost effective and personal service.

The studio maintains a highly personal level of service throughout the design process and offer strong technical and structural solutions through close collaboration with engineering offices.

KAUH is the architecture studio by Vincent Morales Garoffolo (Albuquerque, NM, USA, 1976) and Juan Antonio Sánchez Muñoz (Cádiz, Spain, 1977). 

They both received their architecture degrees from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of Sevilla in 2003. 

Juan Antonio Sánchez Muñoz also holds a Masters degree in landscaping, gardening and public space from the University of Granada (2013-2014), and Vincent Morales Garoffolo translates texts specialized in architecture. 

They have balanced their professional practice with academic activities as professors at the Department of Architecture at Penn State University, USA.

After working in The Netherlands at VHP and WEST 8 respectively, in 2004 they established their own practice under the name KAUH. Between 2004 and 2012 they worked from Seville, and as of 2012 they do so from Granada. With a multifaceted profile, they mostly work in the Andalusian context.

Among the different fields architecture covers, their professional activity focuses on building, public space and landscape design. In their practice they also carry out projects in the editorial field related with the spreading of architecture and they participate in actions that offer them the opportunity to reflect upon the city, the discipline itself and its relationship with society. 

In their practice, they believe in the perceptive and relational experience that our work generates in the construction of our environment. All of this is interwoven by their foremost interest: to materialize and add quality to what belongs to everyone, to the places in which they all interact, the places in which the collective is expressed.

Vivas Arquitectos is an office established in 2006 by César Vivas Millaruelo and Cristian Vivas Millaruelo with its headquarters in Barcelona focused on urbanism, landscape, architecture and design fields with assignments in both public and private sectors.
 
Cristian Vivas was born in Barcelona in 1978. Graduated from the ETSAV, Escuela Superior de Arquitectura del Valles, Barcelona in 2004. Has collaborated at several architecture and landscape offices in Beijing, Dubai and Barcelona before developing his own work as Vivas Arquitectos.

César Vivas was born in Barcelona in 1975. Graduated from the ETSAB, Escuela Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona in 2002. He also studied at Universität Hannover,Architecktur&Landschaftarchitektur in Germany. Has collaborated at several architecture and landscape offices in Berlin and Barcelona before developing his own work as Vivas Arquitectos.

Vivas Arquitectos ranges from conceptualization of ideas and proposals to project implementation and development with the collaboration of technicians and consultants. With a creative, pragmatic and multidisciplinary approach, it works in many fields, from the territorial and urban scale to the architecture and design on small scale, using criteria that take into consideration at the same level formal, spatial and functional issues as well as economical, environmental and social aspects to ensure the sustainable development of the projects.

Studio Pachón-Paredes is an architectural practice based in Madrid, founded in 2020 by Luis G. Pachón and Inés García de Paredes. Their work focuses on the relative synergies between space, time, matter and energy in architecture and society, developing processes of interpretation, adaptation and transformation of local traditions and types, translating them to present and future techniques, functions and contexts. 

Since 2015, they have actively worked with international offices such as Tuñon Arquitectos, Paredes Pedrosa or estudioHerreros. They combine practice with academics at Università IUAV di Venezia Wa.Ve,  teaching graduate and undergraduate studios & workshops; Canadian Carleton University-ETSAM bilateral winter workshops. They have lectured in different institutions, at ETSAM Polytechnic University of Madrid, IUAV di Venezia and Escola da Cidade in Sao Paolo. Their work has been awarded and exhibited at the 16th and 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, COAM Madrid, BEAU XIII Spanish Architecture-Urbanism Biennale, Iberoamerican Historical and Cultural Patrimony PHI; EME3 collapse international architecture festival, ETSAM. Their projects, writings and collaborations have been published in several magazines, books and various digital platforms.

Luis G. Pachón holds a Masters in Architecture with Honors from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. He also studied at DIDA Università degli Studi di Firenze and IaaC Barcelona. Awarded with honors final thesis at the ETSAM UPM, 2015. COAM pfc 1st Prize granted by the Architects Association of Madrid, 2015. He obtained a fellowship by UPM in the Master MPAA.

Inés García de Paredes holds a Masters in Architecture with Honors from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. She also studied at DIDA Università degli Studi di Firenze and IaaC Barcelona. Awarded With Honors PFC at the ETSAM UPM, 2015. COAM Heritage PFC 1st Prize granted by the Architects Association of Madrid, 2015. Iberoamerican Historical and Cultural Patrimony PHI Award 2nd prize, 2016. XIII BEAU Spanish Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism final thesis Award, 2016.

MAIO was founded in 2005. It is currently led by Maria Charneco, Alfredo Lérida, Guillermo López and Anna Puigjaner, architects based in Barcelona, that combine professional activities with academic and research ones.

The works done by MAIO have been published in magazines such as ONdiseño and DETAIL among others. MAIO has been awarded several times, among which stands out: LampLighting Solutions Award 2009, FAD Award finalist in 2007 and 2008, Girona College of Architects Award in 2007, New Working Fields Award finalist in 2009 of the National College of Architects of Spain CSCAE, and finalist of the Arquia/Proxima Award in 2010 of the Architect’s Bank Foundation ARQUIA.

peris+toral.arquitectes. Founded in 2005 by Marta Peris and Jose Manuel Toral, both graduated from ETSAB, peris+toral.arquitectes is an architecture practice based in Barcelona, which combines its professional activity with the academic one. They are currently working in different projects, both in housing and public space, while working as teachers in the  Faculty of Architecture in Barcelona (ETSAB) and IED.

Their work has been published in architecture books and magazines, nationally and internationally, and exhibited in UIA Tokyo 2011, París 2009 and the Venice Biennal 2000. Theorically, the practice has published articles both in architecture books and magazines, among which Arquitectura COAM,  Ed. Fundamentos and  DC Papers are to highlight. Their work has been recognized with different awards such as AJAC Joves Arquitectes 2011, FAD 2009 award fianlists,  Saloni d’Arquitect award fianlists.
