IcelandMaltaKosovoArmenia. The list of new 85 works nominated in the second phase that are competing for the prize, join the first list of 449 nominated projects, making the 2022 edition the one with the most nominated proposals for the Prize since its creation in 1988 with a total of 534 works completed between October 2018 and April 2021 in 41 countries.
As a result of the international concern about the spread of the coronavirus, the EU Mies Award has adapted the timing of this edition in order to include all works and to ensure safety, rigour and excellence in the evaluation of all projects.
The new cycle of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award will reflect on the current challenges faced by architects, clients, policy makers and other professionals.

Some of the works that have been completed during the Covid-19 pandemic are the result of commissions made during or shortly after the 2007-2012 financial crisis. They will be evaluated during the post-pandemic in a clear attempt to continue visiting architecture and its users, neighbours, clients and authors in person. Climate change, pollution, digitalisation and the demographic explosion are also, perhaps more than ever, a global threat that endangers the planet, its limited natural resources and, consequently, our well-being.
Buildings and infrastructure are responsible for at least 40% of all greenhouse gas emissions, which is why the EU Mies Award has to support the rethinking and pre-planning of Europe in a way that prioritises the environment through a cultural project in which design and sustainability are inseparable. The jury had a first online meeting in which they agreed that the works of the EU Mies Award are a solid vision of what is happening in Europe. The two latest winners are a sign of what is important for the whole of Europe as we build for our common sake.
All these works are being reviewed by a demanding jury of distinguished professionals with different backgrounds who will evaluate all the works in a holistic approach, from their conception and construction phases to their final use by the people. The EU Mies Award 2022 counts with works from Armenia, Moldova and Tunisia for the first time.
Together, these two phases will constitute the list of works eligible for the EU Mies Award 2022, which will observe the following calendar:
