Massimiliano Locatelli | CLS Architetti, in collaboration with Italcementi Heidelberg Cement Group, Arup and Cybe as part of the Milano Design Week 2018, unveiled 3D Housing 05, a project for a house of 100 square meter, 3D printed on onsite on central Milan's Piazza Cesare Beccaria.
‘3D Housing 05’, uses a name that refers to the five themes that relate to the house: creativity, sustainability, flexibility, affordability and rapidity. Locatelli spoke about the sustainability of the 3D printed house reusing waste from demolitions, giving a zero net impact.
The prototype was formed over the course of a week (Arup stated that the full house was printed in just 48 hours effective time) and the team have used a portable robot to 3D print a concrete house, made up of 35 modules, the house features curved walls, a living area, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.
The walls were was built by a robot designed by Cybe Construction, a 3D printing company from Poland, using a special mix of concrete and additives developed by Italcementi, one of the world's largest cement suppliers. The roof, windows and doors were added afterwards. The concrete mix is squeezed through the robot's nozzle like toothpaste from a tube, and each section of wall is built from the ground-up in layers.
"Each section of wall takes around an hour to build and the concrete cures in five minutes. There are possibilities to programme the robot to make them larger or smaller or maybe even different shapes. You can also print furniture." CLS Architetti
The cost €1,000 per square meter. Locatelli hopes to get down to €300 in the future. At the end of Milan design week, the house will be lifted and transported separately to Italcementi's headquarters to be displayed.
