It's been already five years since the architecture office Arenas Basabe Palacios won the Europan 10 competition with a design entitled 'Wildgarten' which addressed the urban development of Emil-Behring-Weg in Vienna. The project has finally been approved by the City of Vienna as a masterplan for the 10-hectare area located in Meidling.

The whole process of Wildgarten has been put together by arenas basabe palacios in a very nice comic - ‘The Commons’ - which you can have a look at below and in which the characters explaining the process are the real people that have taken part in it. The story starts with the design that won the Europan 10 competition in Vienna and takes the reader all the way through the development process until its final approval by the Vienna City Council less than two months ago.

Description of project by arenas basabe palacios

After a 5-year collaborative planning process, the ‘Wildgarten’ Project has been definitely approved by the Vienna City Council as a 10ha masterplan (approximately 1000 housing units) for the suburban area around Emil-Behring-Weg in Meidling (Vienna). The promoters (ARE) intend to begin now the development of the architecture projects which will be built between 2016 and 2018.

‘The Commons’ presents the story of the collaborative process in the form of a comic, starting with the winning design in Europan 10 competition in Vienna and its later development with a multidisciplinary team until its definitive approval by the Vienna City Council on the 23rd September, 2015.

The story is guided by the real characters that have taken part in it, including our local partners Mascha & Seethaler, and the experts in management (Raum&Co), mobility (Traffix), landscape architecture (Land in Sicht), energy or sociology, as well as representatives from the neighborhood, the promoters (ARE) and MA21 office at Vienna City Council. All of them were active participants in the design process.

The comic was made for the Holcim Global Awards 2014-2015 as winners of the Holcim Bronze Award in the European region. ‘The Commons’ was valued as an example of innovative, sustainable, democratic urbanism.
