Héctor Zamora create a labyrinthine structure ‘Truth always appears as something veiled’ as part of the Solo Houses ‘Summer group show.’ Zamora erects a work with reference to a labyrinth drawing discovered on a stone found in Knidos, Turkey. A radial maze carved in a block of black marble.
The work takes inspiration in this early example of Eastern labyrinths provides a circular route that leads all the way to the center and then back, without any other options or shortcuts, contrary to later maze-type labyrinths mostly encountered in the West, which contain paths that branch out thus providing options to the walker.
Zamora utilizes locally produced perforated bricks in his circular sculptural installation with a diameter of 16m, built out of 12000 perforated bricks. These semi-translucent walls generate a visual permeability which serves to establishes a conceptual contrast with the classic labyrinth typology which comprises walls that entirely obstruct the visitor’s vision, calling for walkers to cross them in search of the center.
Zamora offers a journey that prompts movement towards the inner self by way of all possible paths, calls for concentration, contemplation and meditation, offering a new perception between the hidden and the open.
With the aim of confronting art with architecture and landscape, the Solo Summer Group Show transforms the rolling green landscape into an imaginary country. The work by Zamora is part a further eight works of art which are mapping the territory. Héctor Zamora’s ‘Truth always appears as something veiled’ — first presented in 2016 — occupies the eighth stops along the trip through this land.
