Architecture studio Wingårdh, teaming up with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, has completed an elegant tower block in the former area of the Cervera Carlsberg. The building named after Pasteurs Tårn is the tallest in the city of Copenhagen with a total height of 120 meters.

Entasis architecture studio received an award in 2009 thanks to a densified vision driven by the context through nine towers that made up a quarter of the homes. The objective was to create a complex of nine towers that would form an urban complex that would be a reference element in the city.

The projection of the building responds to the need to create a housing area and its modulation is a response to formally integrate with the type of architecture of its surroundings, a historical, heavy, and tectonic architecture.
Wingårdhin collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects designed a building with 172 apartments that stretch from the 5th floor to the 36th floor. Depending on the type of home, we can find everything from two-bedroom houses to 5-bedroom homes. Thanks to the location, the height of the building, and the large windows, light is a factor that is present in all the apartments.

Thanks to the depth of the relief on the reddish façade, a play of light and shadow is created in harmony with the brick texture of the buildings in the neighborhood. To improve the user experience and make it feel more transparent to its neighbors, while also perceiving itself as a tall, thin tower, the corners have been glazed. In doing so, the visual weight of the building is concentrated in the center of the facades and provides tenants with floor-to-ceiling corner windows.

Project description by Wingårdhs + Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects

The plan to develop Carlsberg’s old brewery area in Copenhagen with 3100 new residentials is moving towards its completion. Back in 2009 Entasis was awarded the Masterplan prize at WAF for their vision of a context-driven densification, manifested through nine tall and slender towers containing approximately a quarter of the residentials. Thirteen years later the 120-meter-tall Pasteurs Tårn, is completed. The now tallest domestic building in Copenhagen is designed by Wingårdhs through Gert Wingårdh, Anders Olausson and Jonas Edlbad, in collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects.

The Carlsberg area’s powerful brick houses have high demands on newcomers. The historic architecture is warm, heavy and earthy. Pasteurs Tårn has listened to the context. Color and materiality emerged out of the surroundings. The deep relief of the warm, red façade contributes with light and shadow play in harmony with the brick house’s lively texture. As the sole brick relates to the hand, the relief of the steel and its openings matches the measurement of a human. In the mid-sized scale, the house also adheres to a classic division with a double-height base, a shaft and a top where the horizontal alignment turns into smooth surfaces. To enhance the experience of a slim and tall tower the corners have been glazed. By doing so the building’s visual weight concentrates to the center of the facades and gives the tenants floor-to-ceiling corner windows.

Entasis vision for the urban plan is based on its nine towers forming a family. The towers are relevant, and they are so out of two aspects. Outward, towards the city, they’re a collected force that tells the story of the unique Carlsberg area. Inward, within the district, each of the towers marks its distinct and relevant place in the city fabric. For Pasteurs Tårn, it’s the position where the green JC Jacobsens park meets the old industrial quarters, with the ground floor café as the obvious meeting point.

Pasteurs Tårn is a tall building that stands steady, thanks to its deep roots all the way back to a time when tall buildings were pushpins in reality. The church tower in the center of the village, the lighthouse in the distance – they stood for something and were there to navigate after. Nowadays tall buildings are built where it’s possible, not where they contribute to the understanding of a city. And they rarely represent anything but themselves. Pasteurs Tårn is architecture in symbiosis with its district and borrows its space from all of Copenhagen.

Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects is a Danish architecture firm founded in 1922 by Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen, one of the most important Danish architects of his time and one of the creators of Danish modernism. Today, several of his projects remain enduring examples of a revolutionary new architecture where form follows function.

The current studio culture and values date back to 1922 and the ideas and notions of the founder Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen (1894–1984). He was primarily an architect and held throughout his life the belief that architecture is an applied art for the people, never a privilege for a few. He designed with a core vision to create functional architecture and design that would, in essence, advance human equality and induce general well-being for all users.

The architecture studio for more than a century has been based on the vision that good and sustainable architecture must be timeless, of high quality and for everyone. This form must follow the function from the inside out, respecting the context and with the basic intention of improving people's quality of life. This core belief ensures long-lasting designs that naturally adapt to changing uses and needs.
