'Da Organização do Espaço' by Fernando Távora (1923-2005) is aimed at those who are new to the world of architecture and has been a compulsory reading at the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Porto since it was first printed in 1982.
Távora studies in this book, written in 1962, the phenomena of space organization giving man a starring role in its perception and configuration. The content, fully valid nowadays, supports that the organization of our physical environment should be globally addressed and should therefore be everyone’s responsibility. The architect, through his or her actions, should never impede the community’s participation in defining places and cultures.
This book is a valuable testimony for researchers; it illustrates a key moment in modernity, characterised by the reformulation of the vanguard’s old values, tempered both by the critical experiences of CIAM and by the emerging modern architecture formulated from the local contexts experience.
The School of Porto emerged in this context as a representative of an architectural continuity with modernity, but with the ability to transcend it, just as the work of its three most international architects show: Pritzker-winners Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura, and Fernando Távora himself, teacher of both of them. With respect to the latter, it should be noted that, although his built work has undergone several significant publications in Spain, there has been so far an editorial vacuum regarding his theoretical and educational work, widely recognized in Portugal.
The Spanish edition of 'Da Organização do Espaço' serves two main objectives. On one hand, the goal of this publication is to contribute to the recognition of Fernando Távora as a teacher outside the Portuguese borders. On the other hand, to make available a text that stands out for its written simplicity and the depth of its content, so that it ends up becoming a very useful book for learning architecture and a valuable testimony about the architectural scenario of a crucial period of modern architecture in Europe.
